Halle Berry's John Wick Spin-off Gets Hopeful Update From the Oscar-Winning Star

As a cinephile who’s been around the block more times than I care to count, I can’t help but get excited about the prospect of Halle Berry potentially reprising her badass role as Sofia in a John Wick spin-off. Her performance in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum was nothing short of electrifying, and it left us all yearning for more.

Halle Berry continues to express interest in possibly expanding the John Wick universe with a potential spin-off series or film centered around her character, Sofia. In “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” Berry portrayed an old acquaintance of Wick’s (Keanu Reeves) who aided him in his quest for redemption among the High Table. Sofia’s scenes were particularly captivating, with her loyal German Shepherds adding to their survival against the relentless attacks from the High Table’s assassins. Fans have been clamoring for a standalone spin-off featuring Sofia, either in the form of a TV series like “The Continental,” or a dedicated film.

When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Berry expressed her optimism for a potential standalone Sofia film. She’s hopeful about its future prospects, but she’s uncertain if it will materialize due to Lionsgate seemingly moving past the character after John Wick: Chapter 4.

The actress commented, “I would’ve preferred a different storyline in John Wick: Chapter 4, but that wasn’t the direction they chose.

Although it seems unlikely, Berry stays hopeful that Sofia will secure her own venture. However, she understands that Lionsgate needs to act swiftly to ensure the character remains current. Berry elaborated:

It’s an idea I found intriguing for a storyline. We definitely discussed it, and hinted at it in John Wick: Chapter 3. There’s been talk about a spin-off with Lionsgate, and there’s a possibility it could come to life. We should make it happen sooner rather than later, but only time will tell. I have a soft spot for that universe, particularly John Wick, so who knows? We might see it happen eventually.

The universe based on Lionsgate’s movie franchise “John Wick” hasn’t had a smooth launch with its spin-offs. While “The Continental,” streaming on Peacock, was a massive success for the platform and their most popular original release of 2023, the three-part series featuring a young character named Winston (played by Colin Woodell) received mixed feedback from both critics and fans. Some were thrilled to get more “John Wick” action, while others felt it fell short of the enchantment found in the movies and told an unimpressive story without the star power usually associated with A-list actors. The series’ potential success was also hindered by Ian McShane, the original actor portraying Winston, who criticized the show as unnecessary.

Fans eagerly await their return to the universe of John Wick, as they delve once more with Ballerina. The film stars Ana de Armas and focuses on an assassin from the Ruska Roma family, who were previously featured in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Ballerina takes place between Chapters 3 and 4, with Keanu Reeves expected to reprise his role as John Wick in the movie. Furthermore, discussions are ongoing regarding Chad Stahelski’s return for a fifth installment alongside Keanu Reeves, although it remains uncertain how this could be achieved considering the ending of Chapter 4.

Ballerina
is set to be released on June 6, 2025.
