As a seasoned gamer who has braved countless digital terrors and survived to tell the tale, I must say that this year’s spooky season lineup is nothing short of spectacular! Dead by Daylight, with its Haunted by Daylight event, manages to keep the chills coming even in the brightest of days. The Knight’s pumpkin-inspired skin and the eerie glow of the Xenomorph’s ‘blight’ look are just a few examples of how they’ve amped up the creep factor for Halloween.
As the seasons change, they offer fantastic opportunities for live-service games. With autumn now in full swing, it’s the perfect moment for games to embrace the Halloween spirit. Here’s a quick rundown of some titles you might want to keep an eye on this year during the festivities.
Every year, enthusiasts of Halloween will find fresh horror-inspired character skins based on traditional figures such as specters, the undead, bloodsucking vampires, and mummies. Meanwhile, other games might opt for a more innovative approach.
Apex Legends: Techno Terror
Apex Legends introduces a fresh twist with Techno Terror, which leans towards a cyberpunk aesthetic for its Halloween celebration. This limited-time event offers 24 exclusive cosmetic items to acquire and includes unique features in the game mode to make the battles more intriguing this year.
In the Techno Terror event, special candy provides an enhancement for your character, while Cyber Rev shell grenades aid in defeating the opposing team. What’s exciting is that there are also Copycat Kits available, enabling you to appropriate the skills of other Legends, leading to a more unpredictable battlefield during the Halloween season.
Gathering all temporary cosmetic items during this period will reward players with the bonus of the Pathfinder Apex Mecha prestige skin (prestige skin for Pathfinder). This special event takes place from October 15th until November 4th.
Call of Duty: Warzone/Modern Warfare 3: The Haunting 2024
Shooter games often share a connection with the horror genre. While Call of Duty consistently focuses on military themes throughout the year, Halloween season offers a refreshing change for enthusiasts. This is where events like “The Haunting” come into play.
This year, gamers can acquire DLC packages granting them the opportunity to control iconic figures from popular horror culture such as Michael Myers from Halloween and the Clown character from the Terrifier films.
As a gamer partnering with Paramount, I’ve got some exciting additional content for you! This DLC will bestow Makarov and Valeria with eerie grins, all in anticipation of the upcoming horror movie sequel, Smile 2.
Fortnite – Fornitemares 2024
As a gamer, I’d say Fortnite is mostly known for its bloodless vibe. Yet, that doesn’t stop the creators at Epic from getting into the spooky spirit of Halloween! There’s always room for unique cosmetics, even for characters who aren’t traditional superheroes or mascots.
2024’s Fortnitemares is set to offer some spooktacular in-game cosmetics tailored for the Halloween season! These range from charmingly eerie items inspired by the family-friendly Nightmare Before Christmas, all the way to the bloodcurdling gear based on the intense Saw films. I can’t wait to see how they’ve been brought into the Fortnite universe!
2021 brings Fortnitemares with costumes for characters akin to Billy the Puppet (Saw), the Pumpkin King and Sally (Nightmare Before Christmas), Edward Scissorhands, Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), as well as Disney antagonists such as Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook, and Maleficent. Additionally, there are costumes for Marvel figures like She-Venom and Mephisto.
For additional content, the game Fortnite will soon feature new weapons such as the explosive Boom Billy remote bomb, reminiscent of the Saw movie, and a chainsaw, similar to the one wielded by Leatherface.
In various parts of the world, you’ll find numerous TVs showcasing the Billy puppet. Engaging with him, however, leads to a confrontation with the sinister Saw doll.
Dead by Daylight – Haunted by Daylight
As a diehard fan, I can attest that Dead by Daylight maintains its eerie allure year-round. However, the Halloween season truly amplifies the thrill, transforming it into an immersive slasher movie experience. This masterpiece also offers the Haunted by Daylight event, which brings exclusive, themed skins for both killers and survivors to the game.
While the characters in this game have a Halloween theme, they stand out with a vibrant twist, featuring vivid elements such as radiant orange pumpkins. Moreover, not just the Knight, but also the Xenomorph has undergone a transformation – sporting a ‘glowing pestilence’ appearance now.
In addition to the survivors, some also receive fresh cosmetics adorned with typical Halloween motifs such as skeletons, spider webs, and bat wings. While Dead by Daylight maintains its eerie atmosphere all year round, they’ve added a touch of brightness to celebrate the season of fright. The haunting events of Dead by Daylight continue until November 6.
Red Dead Online – Undead Nightmare and All Hallows’ Call to Arms
Red Dead Online joins the spirit of Halloween as well, bringing back the Halloween Pass 2 loaded with eerie items suitable for the season. Additionally, a fresh game mode called “All Hallows’ Call to Arms” is introduced, where players work together to protect settlements from incoming waves of attackers – not all of them being human entities.
Engaging with the Hallows mode will grant players twice as many rewards, and this exciting event will run throughout the Halloween period.
Overwatch 2 – Halloween Terror 2024
For many Overwatch events are rinse and repeat. Having said that, one of the most beloved is definitely Halloween Terror.
This year, Blizzard is set to introduce a fresh game mode titled Junkenstein’s Laboratory. It’s essentially a unique take on the deathmatch format, offering players the opportunity to customize specific abilities for their characters. To illustrate, Moira can opt to specialize in either healing or damage during her ultimate, while Genji could deflect attacks from all directions when he activates his ability.
If Junkenstein’s Lab isn’t your preferred choice, the Halloween Terror event offers a variety of alternative game modes. In Wrath of the Bride, Sombra takes center stage as the antagonist. Here, players engage in battles against super-powered characters and swarms of hybrid creatures known as “zomnics” (the fusion of zombies and omnics).
As a passionate fan, I can’t help but get excited about Overwatch Season 13, also known as ‘Spellbinder’. This season brings a captivating Hogwarts-inspired Widowmaker displaying her enchanting magical abilities. Furthermore, the game continues to honor its recent collaboration with My Hero Academia, offering a variety of MHA-themed skins for characters such as Tracer and Reinhardt, among others. And let’s not forget about the numerous Halloween skins that have been amassed over the years – they’re only available during the chilling season!
Overwatch 2’s Halloween Terror event is here to stay until Nov. 4.
