‘Hamilton’ Cancels Kennedy Center Run After Trump Takeover

Due to President Trump’s control over the Kennedy Center, Hamilton has decided not to perform there during the upcoming season.

Originally scheduled for a March 2026 performance at the Kennedy Center, marking its third appearance at that theater, the hit musical was cancelled due to several factors. Jeffrey Seller, the lead producer, cited the dismissals of the Kennedy Center president and board chairman, as well as the suspension of programming at the center, as key reasons for this decision.

Due to the latest developments, it’s not feasible for us, with clear moral conviction, to join and contribute to the fresh culture that seems to be enforced at the Kennedy Center,” stated the spokesperson instead.

In February, Donald Trump assumed the role of chair at the institution, leading to the removal of Democratic members from the Kennedy Center Board. Subsequently, the tenure of Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter and chairman David M. Rubenstein came to an end. This decision was made following Trump’s earlier statements that he intended to dismiss Rubenstein and assume the chair position himself.

Ric Grenell, formerly associated with the previous Trump administration, has been appointed as the interim executive director. He expressed his intentions to revitalize the art world by saying “let’s make art thrive again” and revealed plans for a grand festivity commemorating the arrival of Christmas, which he referred to as a significant celebration of Christ’s birth.

A number of prominent figures linked to the Kennedy Center stepped down after the announcement, among them Ben Folds, Renée Fleming, and Shonda Rhimes. However, Issa Rae chose to cancel her performance at the Kennedy Center.

Previously, the Kennedy Center enjoyed bipartisan backing, free from political influence. This was demonstrated when “Hamilton” performed at the Kennedy Center back in 2018, even under the Trump administration.

The statement indicates that we’re not targeting his administration, but rather the political decisions made by the Kennedy Center since its recent change in leadership.

During the tenure of the previous Trump administration, there were instances where they encountered controversy with the popular Broadway show “Hamilton”. When Vice President Mike Pence attended a performance, some audience members booed him, and during the final bow, cast members spoke out, commenting on the diversity of the cast and urging the administration to uphold the rights of all Americans.

The seller expressed his doubt about whether the performance of Hamilton at the Kennedy Center might have been suddenly terminated.

The cancellation is not just a matter of convenience, it’s a critical business move. Given that Hamilton is a vast and internationally acclaimed production, it would have severe financial and personal repercussions for the numerous employees if the Kennedy Center’s new management were to abruptly terminate or renegotiate our agreement. The recent actions of the new Chairman suggest that agreements and past commitments may not be reliable,” he stated.
