Hammer Museum to Celebrates the Legacy of Alice Coltrane in ‘Monument Eternal’

As a gamer with a deep-rooted appreciation for music and art, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming exhibition at UCLA’s Hammer Museum – Monument Eternal! With its focus on the enigmatic Alice Coltrane, this show promises to be an immersive journey into the realms of sound, spirituality, and creativity that she so effortlessly navigated.

Come February, I’ll be peeking behind the curtains at the Hammer Museum to uncover “Monument Eternal,” an exhibition that celebrates the life and impact of jazz legend Alice Coltrane. Named after her 1977 book, this show promises a unique opportunity to explore the vastness of her artistic talent through previously unreleased audio recordings, scarce footage, and personal artifacts from her archives.

As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that my tribute, Monument Eternal, is joining The Year of Alice, a nationwide celebration honoring her groundbreaking achievements. This journey will unfold through three distinct chapters:

Exhibiting alongside these themes will be a display of pieces by 19 modern Black American artists influenced by Coltrane’s legacy, such as Rashid Johnson, Jasper Marsalis, Cauleen Smith, Martine Syms, Star Feliz, and her grandnephew Steven Ellison, more famously known as Flying Lotus. Their works, which span sculpture, painting, photography, and performance, will engage Coltrane’s autobiography in a contemporary discussion, delving into the lasting influence she has on current art and culture.
