Today marks the 74th birthday of esteemed actress Shabana Azmi, specifically September 18. In this confession, the actress expressed her gratitude towards Javed Akhtar’s wife, Honey Irani, for fostering her close bond with Zoya and Farhan Akhtar.
In 2021, during an interview on the Tweak India YouTube channel with Twinkle Khanna, Shabana Azmi disclosed that her parents were against her relationship with Javed Akhtar. She explained that the difficulty lay in the fact that he was already married and had children. (In the Bollywood movie “Rocky and Rani’s Love Story”, this could be a possible plot point.)
The seasoned actress emphasized the reason why it’s unwise to engage in speculation. “It’s already tough for those directly involved,” she said, “and yet, it seems people do it just for idle gossip. Furthermore, critics might ask, ‘How can you be a feminist and find yourself in this predicament?'” she added.

Beyond this, Azmi acknowledged Honey Irani for never turning her children, Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar, against her. “She had the opportunity to be extremely generous, and she would have been right to do so… But she never did that. In fact, she sent the kids with us to London when they were quite young, which fostered a strong connection. It’s a testament to her, Javed’s, and my own good influence that we maintain such a positive relationship with Zoya and Farhan,” she expressed.
Shabana and Javed got married in 1984. The two never had kids.
