As a long-time Sandler fanatic and connoisseur of his brand of comedy, I must admit that my heart skipped a beat upon witnessing the trailer for Happy Gilmore 2. The original film was a staple of my teenage years, and revisiting Chubbs, Shooter, and Virginia brings an unexpected wave of nostalgia. It’s like finding an old pair of sneakers that still fit perfectly – comfortable, familiar, yet somehow still exciting.
Netflix has a little surprise Christmas gift for Adam Sandler fans that’s 28 years in the making.
On Wednesday during its NFL Christmas Gameday broadcast, the streaming platform unveiled a trailer for the forthcoming film “Happy Gilmore 2“, a sequel to the 1996 sports comedy starring Adam Sandler that catapulted him to fame. The original cast, including Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Dennis Dugan, Allen Covert, and Ben Stiller, will rejoin for this new comedy.
In the sequel to “Happy Gilmore”, unveiled in 2022, Adam Sandler’s character, a former hockey flop turned golfer named Happy Gilmore, competes in a senior golf tournament. Chadwick Boseman reprises his part as professional golfer Shooter McGavin and Julie Bowen portrays Gilmore’s love interest, Virginia Venit. Additionally, Ben Stiller is set to return to the cast, having played Hal L in the original “Happy Gilmore” and more recently in Sandler’s “Hubie Halloween” from 2020.
The sequel is the 13th film where Adam Sandler worked together with his writing partner Tim Herlihy, who was a fellow cast member on Saturday Night Live during Sandler’s rise to fame, along with Tina Fey and other writers in the early 90s. After Sandler left SNL, they started creating the popular man-child-out-of-water comedies that made Sandler famous, beginning with the succession of movies like Billy Madison (1995) and Happy Gilmore (1996).
Apart from the original cast members, renowned artist Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley from “The Substance,” frequent Sandler collaborator Nick Swardson, actor-director Benny Safdie (who penned and directed the critically acclaimed film “Uncut Gems”), and sports personality Dan Patrick are also part of the cast. Additionally, Eminem, NFL player Travis Kelce, and talk show host Dan Patrick will make guest appearances in this comedy.
In 2020, Netflix expanded its partnership with Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, planning to produce an additional four films. Prior to this renewal, a deal signed in 2014 had produced movies such as “The Ridiculous 6,” “The Do-Over,” “Sandy Wexler,” “The Week Of,” “Murder Mystery,” and “100% Fresh” for Netflix. Notably, “Murder Mystery” was Netflix’s most popular film in the year 2019.
