Menopause, according to Sally Wainwright, is the ultimate punk rock.
On Tuesday at the Series Mania TV festival in Lille, the BAFTA-winning British television producer behind Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax revealed her latest project, Riot Women – a comedic drama about an unlikely collective of middle-aged women who band together to create an impromptu punk rock group.
During the Series Mania TV festival in Lille on Tuesday, the award-winning British TV showrunner for Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax presented her new creation, Riot Women – a blend of comedy and drama centered around a group of middle-aged women who spontaneously form a punk rock band.)
Wainwright shared that he thought of the concept around a decade ago and began discussing it with colleagues at work, proposing the creation of a punk band composed of women in their mid-50s. He explained that the project is deeply personal, focusing on his life experiences and menopause, but he wanted to approach it in an engaging and thrilling manner rather than the usual.
“It’s properly funny and properly gripping from beginning to end,” added Benn.
The movie “Riot Women” features Joanna Scanlan (“After Love,” “The Thick of It”), Rosalie Craig (“Serpent Queen”), Tamsin Greig (“Sexy Beast”), Lorraine Ashbourne (“Alma’s Not Normal”), and Amelia Bullmore (“Vienna Blood” from “The Buccaneers”) playing the roles of a menopausal punk band.
Benn and Wainwright noted that the actors not only mastered playing their own musical instruments but also collaborated in penning the lyrics for their Riot Women tunes, such as “Seeing Red,” a song reportedly based on menopause by Wainright, and “Shitting Pineapples,” a composition about childbirth.
Finding broadcasters to support a TV series focusing on women over 50, particularly one without a crime-centric storyline, proved to be difficult for Benn. “This show doesn’t feature any dead bodies,” she pointed out, “yet in today’s environment, it seems that’s not what people are seeking, which is unfortunate.
Wainright pointed out that there are no television shows featuring women in their 50s, which he finds quite disappointing as these women can be incredibly amusing and lively.
The six-episode series was filmed in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, the location of the show “Happy Valley,” and was created by Drama Republic for both the BBC and BritBox. The rights to “Riot Women” are currently being offered globally through Mediawan.
