Harlan Coben’s New Novel ‘Nobody’s Fool’ Is “More of a Sequel” to Netflix Hit Series ‘Fool Me Once’

Renowned author Harlan Coben, known for works like “The Stranger”, “Missing You”, and “Stay Close”, is set to release his new book, “Nobody’s Fool”, on Tuesday. What might astonish some readers is the source of its inspiration.

Harlan Coben reveals that his latest novel focuses on the character Sami Kierce from ‘Fool Me Once’, portrayed by Adeel Akhtar, a year following the events of the series. Interestingly, Sami Kierce and his wife were not significant characters in the original book, making this work more of a continuation of the TV show rather than the novel itself. I can’t recall such an occurrence happening before, especially not in my own writing career.

Danny Brocklehurst, one of the writers behind the series, mentioned that Sami, played by Adeel, was a minor character in the original book. However, for the series, we significantly expanded Sami’s role,” explained Danny Brocklehurst.

Nicola Shindler, the producer, notes: “We’re always searching for elements not present in the original book that are crucial for a series adaptation.” Richard Fee, another producer, then explains: “Danny and Harlan put considerable effort into developing the character, and now, as a result of their work, Harlan has written another book centered around it.

In an interview with THR, Coben shares memories of crafting the Kierce character for the eight-part series, explaining that he was given a significant role with a plotline that took viewers by surprise. “I don’t think anyone anticipated what ultimately transpired with his story,” Coben explains.

In the summary of the latest novel, we find that a year after the tragic occurrences depicted in ‘Fool Me Once’, a long-buried secret from Sami Kierce’s college past resurfaces to complicate his life. As if present-day challenges weren’t enough for Kierce, it seems his past hasn’t quite let go of him yet. Currently, he is a private investigator and a new father, struggling to pay off debts by instructing aspiring detectives at a night school in New York City. One day, while teaching his class, he spots a familiar face among the students.
