Harold and Kumar are going to get some burgers and buzz one more time.
The trio responsible for the global hit Netflix show “Cobra Kai,” Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, have sealed a contract to pen a fresh chapter in the “Harold & Kumar” series, the amusing stoner buddy comedy movies that were well-liked during the early 2000s.
As a gamer, it feels surreal to be part of this journey. Hurwitz and Schlossberg are set to guide the next chapter in this story, and it’s all happening under the roof of Mandate Pictures, owned by Lionsgate. This is like coming full circle for these gentlemen, as their successful Hollywood careers were kick-started by penning the initial movie, “Harold & Kumar go to White Castle” back in 2004, and then making their directorial debut with “Harold & Kumar Escape Guantanamo Bay” in 2008. I can’t wait to see what this new adventure holds!
It’s anticipated that John Cho and Kal Penn, who portrayed the main roles, might reprise their parts, but as of now, there are no confirmed agreements with the actors. The participation of Neil Patrick Harris, another significant cast member, remains uncertain.
Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald are set to create their Counterbalance Entertainment production, alongside Greg Shapiro, who was involved in the initial films and later won an Oscar for Best Picture due to his work on war drama “The Hurt Locker”. Mandate, who also worked on the original trilogy, will be part of the team as well. This upcoming project marks one of the first ventures under Nathan Kahane, the current president of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, who is planning to step down at the end of the year and return to Mandate where he will resume his role as a producer.
Dina Hillier will executive produce for Counterbalance.
In the movie “Harold & Kumar,” directed by Danny Leiner, we follow the journey of two friends, Harold Lee, a Korean American, and Kumar Patel, an Indian American. They decide to drive across town to reach White Castle, a burger joint in the Northeast, due to their sudden hunger after smoking marijuana. However, the nearest White Castle is quite far, so they end up experiencing a string of peculiar incidents instead. These include being arrested by prejudiced police officers, having an encounter with a drugged-up cheetah, and picking up a hitchhiker who unexpectedly turns out to be Neil Patrick Harris, under the influence of ecstasy.
White Castle stood out with its powerful blend of stoner and sex comedy, flipping stereotypes, addressing contemporary social and political matters, and showcasing actors typically not in leading roles. This movie enjoyed a successful theatrical release and gained cult status on home entertainment. The films Guantanamo and 2011’s A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, followed suit. These three movies were produced by Warner Bros.’ division New Line Cinema.
Excitedly, Hurwitz and Schlossberg have announced that Harold and Kumar will be making a comeback, taking us back to the original R-rated, smoke-filled madness. They’re ready to share their experiences with a new group of fans, but let’s keep it a secret from their kids!
Ever since that first movie, I’ve seen my gaming skills level up significantly. Afterward, I got the opportunity to step into the role of Sulu in the Star Trek reboot, a part for which I was even nominated for an Indie Spirit award for my performance in the 2018 thriller Searching. Additionally, you might recognize me from my stint on the long-running medical mystery series House. Post that, I had the honor to be a part of the Obama administration, serving as an associate director in the White House Office of Public Engagement.
Simultaneously, Hurwitz and Schlossberg embarked on a rollercoaster journey in Hollywood reminiscent of the adventures portrayed in the movies “Harold & Kumar.” The popularity of these films propelled them into high demand within the comedy genre. They penned and directed the 2012 film “American Pie: American Reunion” and produced the 2018 comedy “Blockers.”
Hurwitz and Schlossberg experienced a Hollywood adventure as thrilling as that of Harold & Kumar. The success of their movies put them in high demand for comedies, leading them to write, direct, and produce the 2012 film “American Pie: American Reunion” and the 2018 comedy “Blockers.
Following their partnership with Heald, they entered a prosperous phase marked by lofty achievements when they jointly produced, directed, and executive-produced the series “Cobra Kai.” This continuation of the iconic “Karate Kid” films resonated powerfully across generations, blending nostalgia with fresh talent, seamlessly integrating humor, drama, emotion, and action. It catapulted to become one of Netflix’s most successful global productions. Critics and peers alike applauded the show, and its third season even earned a nomination for an Emmy Award in the outstanding comedy series category. This year, the sixth and concluding season aired on Netflix, paving the way for this dynamic trio to pursue their next venture.
