Harry and Meghan Urge Others to Open Homes to L.A. Fire Victims: “People Have Been Left With Nothing”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are asking compassionate individuals to offer shelter to people affected by the Los Angeles wildfires.

Approximately 180,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in the county due to the fierce wildfires that have swept across neighborhoods and destroyed countless acres. On their website, sussex.com, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle expressed concern over the situation, stating: “In recent days, wildfires in Southern California have wreaked havoc on families, homes, schools, healthcare facilities, and numerous other resources, affecting people from all backgrounds. The state has declared an emergency.

The family residing in Montecito, California, with their two kids, shares organizations actively involved in disaster aid, such as José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen – a collaborator with the Archewell Foundation that’s now providing meals to both emergency workers and those affected by the fire. Additionally, they highlight CAL FIRE and the L.A. Fire Department Foundation, who work hand-in-hand to assist firefighters putting their lives on the line. Lastly, they bring attention to the Animal Wellness Foundation, which is dedicated to helping animals and wildlife in distress.

At the conclusion of their message, Harry and Meghan kindly request that locals extend a helping hand. “Open up your homes,” they suggested. “If you have the capacity, offer a refuge to friends, family members, or pets who may have to leave due to evacuation. And don’t forget to check on your neighbors with disabilities or elderly residents to see if they require assistance in evacuating.

They urge you to lend a hand,” they say further. “Sadly, some families and individuals find themselves without even the basics. If you can, please think about donating items such as clothing, toys for children, and other essentials. The American Red Cross is actively assisting those in need right now.

On Tuesday, wildfires ignited by Santa Ana winds started in Pacific Palisades, then moved into sections of Malibu and Santa Monica during the night. By Thursday evening, Governor Gavin Newsom reported that the Palisades Fire was 6% under control, while the Eaton Fire continues to be uncontained. A fresh wildfire emerged in West Hills, California on Thursday evening, near houses in Calabasas and Hidden Hills neighborhoods.

So far, ten individuals have lost their lives, and this count is likely to rise, since approximately 180,000 residents have been instructed to leave their homes.
