Harry Potter: Magic Awakened to shutter in America, Europe and Oceania, will stay open in Asia

  • Harry Potter: Magic Awakened is shutting down
  • The card-battling deckbuilder will go offline in all territories except Asia
  • A NetEase publishing deal seems to be keeping it afloat

As a gamer who’s been around since the days of Nokia Snake and Gameboy Advance, it’s always a bittersweet moment when a game I’ve invested time into is shutting down. Harry Potter: Magic Awakened was one such game that brought a piece of my childhood to life in a new way, but alas, the magic seems to be waning.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, a card-battling game, is closing down in North America, Europe, and Oceania regions. But it’ll keep running in China and many Eastern countries due to an ongoing partnership with NetEase. In-app purchases are no longer available, and the servers will be turned off on October 29th of this year. The game has been taken down from all digital storefronts.

Magic Awakened was launched in 2023, but unfortunately, it has since become part of a growing list of games that have been canceled this year. This development certainly sparks questions about the enduring appeal of the Harry Potter franchise and NetEase’s ability to sustain its longevity for as long as they’ve planned.

Still, it’ll be a bit of a disappointment for a lot of players, especially given that other games like Brave Nine have at least managed to make arrangements to let players continue to enjoy the game offline. I suppose the magic just isn’t there to facilitate that when it comes to Magic Awakened.

And beyond

And before you ask, no, you can’t just transfer to another server. The drawbacks of live service games, eh? It’s a bit odd to think that I’ve grown up seeing the move from mobile games where the idea of a consistent internet connection was a pipe dream, to that being standard, and all the pitfalls it involves. Then again, competition is more prevalent than ever.

Still, there are sure to be plenty of games out there that’ll be available long after the servers have shuttered. You can find some of them on our massive list of the best mobile games of 2024 (so far)!
