The controversy surrounding HBO’s forthcoming Harry Potter reboot featuring Snape has intensified even further, and now one of the original series’ actors has fanned the flames.
Jason Isaacs, famously known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the initial film series, has recently spoken out against fans who’ve criticized the casting of Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. At FanExpo Denver, he expressed his opinion openly, labeling online critics as biased and praising Essiedu as one of the “most exceptional actors I’ve ever encountered in my career.

According to Collider, Isaacs stated that he’s observed some individuals on the internet behaving rudely towards him, and their behavior, in essence, appears to be rooted in racism.
Actor Joseph Tomlinson Essiedu, recognized for his work in “I May Destroy You” and “Black Mirror”, was recently chosen to embody the enigmatic Potion’s Master—a role iconically portrayed by the late Alan Rickman earlier. Despite Essiedu’s evident skill, the announcement has ignited a heated discussion among devoted fans, who believe that his casting strays too much from J.K. Rowling’s original character depiction.

The critique primarily focuses on the narrative itself, rather than the performance. Fans have expressed deep-rooted worries that transforming Snape into a Black character might compromise significant parts of his storyline. Specifically, Snape’s backstory as an outcast who was bullied by James Potter and his friends carries new weight when considering race.
Snape is also described by Rowling in the books several times as being pale and “sallow.”
It’s not new that significant characters from the “Harry Potter” series have undergone racial changes. A stir was caused when Hermione Granger was portrayed by a Black actress in the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” just as it did earlier. Those expressing concerns about creative freedom were often branded as prejudiced, even though their arguments were often centered around maintaining narrative consistency and character interactions.
Still, Isaacs dismissed all criticism of Essiedu’s casting as being rooted in bigotry.

He praised the entire cast of the new Harry Potter television series, saying they’re all exceptional. He further hinted that they might be left speechless, or more accurately, awestruck, when they witness Paapa’s performance on screen,” he said during the panel.
The upcoming HBO adaption is touted as a truer-to-life rendition of J.K. Rowling’s original books, with each novel allotted its own season. However, some of the casting choices hint that the project might be veering away from this commitment in aspects beyond just tone or running time.
Alongside Essiedu, the latest cast features John Lithgow portraying Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer taking on McGonagall, Nick Frost stepping into Hagrid’s role, and Luke Thallon as Quirrell. Filming is set to commence later this year, with a potential release date between late 2026 and early 2027.

The negative reaction towards Snape, as portrayed in the Harry Potter series, continues unabated, and seems to intensify as additional promotional content is released. Some fans who feel overlooked or belittled by the production team, particularly original cast members, may grow increasingly disenchanted with the remake prior to its premiere.
In a period where numerous franchises struggle to revamp timeless tales without upsetting devoted followers, HBO might encounter a recurring issue: replacing admiration with innovation, yet discovering that the fanbase they relied upon has moved on.
