Suits LA finally delivered on what fans have been waiting for, as Gabriel Macht made an appearance as Harvey Specter in the episode “Batman Returns.” The appearance connects Suits LA to the original series, Suits, and it’s a reason for fans to be excited. Unfortunately, it’s one of the only reasons for fans to get excited right now, as “Batman Returns” is a mostly uneventful episode.
The Moment Everyone’s Been Waiting For: Harvey Specter’s Return
The narrative in “Batman Returns” begins with Ted Black going to a diner where his brother, Eddie, is employed. While there, Pellegrini, the mob boss that Ted aims to bring down, shows up, causing Ted to fret about Eddie’s well-being. Later on, during a softball game, one of the players from Ted’s team comes up to him on the mound, and it turns out to be Harvey.
Ted tells Harvey about his ordeal with Pellegrini, so after the game, Ted, Eddie, and Harvey go to a bar. There, Harvey tells Ted that the rumor is Pellegrini has someone inside Ted’s office. They also seem to have an inside joke where they refer to each other as Batman, although maybe Harvey should have called Ted “Green Arrow,” based on whom the actor played.
The rest of the flashback plot is focused on Ted’s relationship with Samantha Railsback. Before he goes to play softball, Ted says he saw an offer letter Samantha got from a California law firm. Samantha says she plans to stay in New York because Ted’s there, but based on facts from the present, she doesn’t hold true to that. In the present, Samantha says she left Ted because he was so focused on the Pellegrini case.
Ted and Erica Make Big Moves on Lester’s Case
Ted gets the word that the studio backing Lester Thompson’s movie wants his name off the film, and Samantha is representing the studio. Ted goes to Samantha and gets upset, but Samantha says they have every right to do it because Lester violated his contract’s morality clause. If Ted and Lester take the studio to court, evidence that would be inadmissible in Lester’s murder trial would come out during the lawsuit.
Ted recruits Erica to talk to Lester with him. While they try to figure out what to do, Lester says that he doesn’t want his name off the film as it’s the only thing he’s ever done that’s made him proud. They all agree to move up his murder trial, and Ted and Erica go to court to get permission from the judge. The prosecutor for the case, Elizabeth Smith, is furious and says the state needs more time.
Ted goes to Amanda Stevens for help, as she said in Episode 2 that she’d do anything to stop Elizabeth from winning. When Ted reconvenes with Elizabeth and the judge back in court, Elizabeth says that she has a surprise witness that will add another week to her investigation. Then, Amanda walks in with evidence that Elizabeth has pulled this stunt before in cases without a real witness, and Amanda suggests Elizabeth reveal the name of the witness to the judge. Elizabeth refuses. Ted gives Amanda a bigger office later in the episode to thank her for her help.
Still trying to keep Lester’s name on the film, Ted delivers an injunction to Samantha, so the studio has to pause while the case finishes. However, Samantha reveals she knows about Lester stealing from the studio, and Ted realizes he has to solve this studio problem immediately. He and Erica go to meet with the head of the studio, Bill, who hates Lester and won’t budge. Ted has one final move, and he tells Samantha that all of his A-list clients won’t work with the studio if Lester’s name is taken off the film. He’s bluffing, but it pays off as Bill believes it and lets Lester’s name stay on the film.
Stuart and Rick Deal With a Famous Client
While Samantha deals with Ted and Erica, she assigns Rick Dodsen to work with Stuart Lane on a case with a famous client: Stuart will hand the criminal law, and Rick will be there to assist because Stuart has no bedside manner. The only problem is Samantha hasn’t told Stuart, meaning Rick has to ask for Stuart’s help, which gets Rick sucked into playing Dungeons & Dragons with Stuart in return. Annoyingly, the episode doesn’t show them actually playing, which could’ve been a nice change of pace.
The client is actor Enrico Colantoni, who’s been in Veronica Mars, Just Shoot Me, and Galaxy Quest. He was charged with criminal trespassing as he went onto his neighbor’s lawn and trimmed a hedge into the shape of a penis. Rick and Stuart can’t get Enrico to confess, so they do a “good cop, bad cop” routine with him. In a meeting with Enrico, Stuart gets so mad at Enrico that he jumps at him, nearly making contact with the actor. It infuriates the actor and gets Stuart in trouble with Rick, but the lawyers do learn why Enrico did it.
Enrico’s neighbor runs a comedy account on TikTok aimed at “Gen Z.” The neighbor started a feud when Enrico parked his car poorly, as the actor had to rush inside to use the restroom. Enrico’s neighbor called him, pretending to be a police officer, talking about Enrico’s poor parking, and Enrico tried to explain why he did it by giving graphic details about his restroom visit. The neighbor recorded the phone call and sent it to Enrico as part of the prank. Rick and Stuart then use that evidence to confront the neighbor for impersonating an officer, which causes the TikToker to drop charges against Enrico.
Later, Rick delivers the news to Enrico. Enrico’s upset that Rick’s not doing more, which confuses Rick. Then, Enrico admits that he’s jealous of his neighbor, because Enrico watches his children laughing at the TikToker, but they don’t laugh at him like they used to. Rick, always trying to prove that he gets his clients what they want, comes up with the idea to get Enrico on one of the TikToker’s streams.
Back at his office, Rick opens a gift of wine that Ted sent as congratulations for Rick’s new position. Stuart also apologizes for his temper, and admits he and Ted didn’t always bring out the best in each other. This focus on Rick and Stuart while Ted is not involved in their plot also makes me think Ted and Stuart might repair their relationship. The next episode of Suits LA, titled “You’re On Your Own,” will premiere on March 23 at 9 p.m. on NBC and will be available to stream on Peacock soon after.
