Hassan Hajjaj’s Eclectic Portraits Capture Moments of Cultural Connection

Hannah Traore Gallery is unveiling a brand new solo exhibition by Moroccan photographer Hassan Hajjaj. This collection spans two decades and showcases a visual conversation between North African culture and Western symbols, infusing every piece with lively energy – from the unique clothing styles of the subjects to the vividly patterned frames themselves.

In “People of My Time,” the artist’s work is deeply representative of their artistic spirit. Hajjaj skillfully blends classic Moroccan customs with British pop culture references. The visages of Imaan Hammam, Che Lovelace, Honey Dijon, Sarah Perles, and Afrikan Boy serve as his inspirational muses in this creative endeavor.

As I stroll through this gaming world, I find myself enveloped by intricate frames crafted from reclaimed game pieces, evoking the vibrant energy of a bustling Medina marketplace. Each portrait within these frames feels tangible and real, inviting me to step into their stories. Instead of just viewing them as static images, these photograph-and-frame combinations are a testament to the dynamic nature of cultural identity, urging me to appreciate the spontaneous melodies that breathe life into our experiences.

Based on his experiences growing up in Larache and London, the artist expresses a unique sense of ‘Otherness’ through his artistic interpretation of diversity. He described this upcoming exhibition as a chance to bridge connections between people from various locations and time periods, offering a glimpse into an alternate universe. This was expressed in a recent statement he made.

Next to the photo exhibit, the artist invites guests inside a real-life replica of “Jajjah,” his Moroccan tea room – a vibrant and welcoming extension of Hajjaj’s world.

The exhibition titled “People of My Time” officially begins on February 13, 2023, and will continue to be displayed at the gallery until March 29, 2025.
