As a seasoned gamer and horror enthusiast with decades of sleepless nights under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation as the seventh installment of the Scream franchise looms on the horizon. The genre has always been close to my heart, and the Scream series, in particular, has been a constant companion since its inception back in 1996.
For decades now, the horror genre has continued to flourish, bringing great joy to fans such as myself. Some of the top-tier horror films have resurfaced with new sequels, like the Scream series. The upcoming seventh film in this franchise is one of the most eagerly awaited upcoming horror movies, despite a fair amount of turmoil behind the scenes. Notably, Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera have parted ways with the series. And recently, Barrera shared whether she’s been in touch with her co-star and franchise lead Neve Campbell.
At present, our knowledge about Scream 7 is rather scant, but ardent fans of the horror franchise were elated when it was disclosed that Campbell would be reprising her role as Sidney Prescott. This excitement intensified even more after she decided to step away from Scream VI due to a payment disagreement. More recently, Decider asked Barrera if there’s been any communication between herself and the actress famed for The Craft. In response, Barrera shared:
Indeed, we haven’t had a meaningful conversation as yet. I believe everyone has the freedom to decide, choosing what seems best for them. I wholeheartedly acknowledge and appreciate their perspectives, understanding that they are making choices that help them navigate through life effectively.
Here it is. Despite not having any direct communication between them, Melissa Barrera appears to maintain a gracious attitude towards Neve Campbell as she re-joins the horror series where Campbell has been the central figure since 1996. What an exemplary display of maturity and professionalism!
In several aspects, Barrera’s recent comments and respect towards Neve Campbell echo past statements from the actress of Abigail. Following Campbell’s departure from Scream VI just before filming started, Barrera wholeheartedly backed the 51-year-old horror legend. Now, when it comes to her own turn in the spotlight, Barrera isn’t casting any negative remarks towards Sidney Prescott herself.
There’s been a lot of backstage turmoil while producing Scream 7. The departure of Melissa Barrera was just the beginning, as Jenna Ortega also decided to step away, confirming that the Carpenter sisters who were central in the last two films would no longer be involved. Even the director, Christopher Landon, parted ways with the project, causing some fans to worry.
Enthusiasm surged when it was disclosed that Neve Campbell would reprise her role as Sidney Prescott. This news, combined with the fact that the original Scream writer, Kevin Williamson, is set to direct, has sparked great anticipation. Courteney Cox and Patrick Dempsey have reportedly discussed their potential returns as Gale Weathers and Mark Kincaid respectively. If Dempsey indeed comes back, it would mark the first time we’ve seen the franchise’s legacy character, Mark Kincaid, since Scream 3.
Further updates are imminent as “Scream 7” is actively being produced and slated for a theater release on February 27, 2026. In the meantime, take a look at the upcoming movie releases in 2025 while we all eagerly anticipate.
