As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher of countless shows, I can’t help but feel a twinge of empathy for the production teams behind these ambitious projects like Stranger Things and the upcoming Harry Potter series. The challenge of managing young cast members who grow up faster than the storyline progresses is indeed a tricky one.
Despite television’s long history, a persistent issue for shows featuring younger casts is the rapid growth spurts experienced by the child actors. If significant time doesn’t pass within the show but does in real life, it can cause problems. For instance, when Stranger Things’ fifth and final season premieres on Netflix, approximately 10 years will have passed since the first season, but on the series, not much time seems to have elapsed. Fans have voiced concerns about the cast members’ aging, as they are now in their early twenties or late teens. Similarly, HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series might encounter similar issues. However, there is a silver lining: they already have a plan in place.
In the year 2023, it became public knowledge that Max initiated production of a fresh TV adaptation of “Harry Potter”, stepping into the legacy left by one of cinema’s most triumphant franchises. The casting process was open for children aged between 9 and 11 years old, who would fill the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.
Despite the fact that many streamers typically release seasons with significant gaps compared to network TV, this could mean that child actors might grow quite a bit during these breaks. For a large-scale production like Potter, which is likely challenging to film, this growth could present some difficulties. However, HBO’s chairman and CEO, Casey Bloys, has shared at a press conference that they already have a strategy to maintain consistency in the series (as reported by TVLine).
We’re considering the possibility of filming both the first and second seasons relatively close in time due to the significant change in a child’s life between ages 11 and 13. While we could stretch it to 13 to 15, the idea is to find a way to shoot them without allowing too much physical growth to occur between seasons. This is something we need to ponder over.
Initially, when the Harry Potter series was launched, the production was granted a 10-year contract. This made it simpler to organize filming during the children’s ages and consecutive shooting seasons if necessary. Although a multi-season or multi-year contract doesn’t always guarantee back-to-back filming, the Harry Potter series presents a particularly challenging scenario due to its unique demands. As mentioned, it appears that the company is primarily focused on the initial years because the actors will reach puberty during this period.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m always keeping tabs on my favorite shows, and HBO’s upcoming lineup has me pretty excited. However, it seems like the release schedule might shift occasionally. Don’t get too hyped just yet, as they won’t be dropping seasons back-to-back. Instead, we’ll likely have to exercise some patience, as their “annual schedule” could prove challenging depending on how much content is prepared in advance. For now, it looks like they’re focusing on back-to-back filming for the time being.
Even though I’m not sure how the aging will play out in the Harry Potter series, I’m excited to dive into this magical world and see what it holds. As things stand, no specific plot has been revealed yet, but they plan on adapting stories from all seven of J.K. Rowling’s books.
The start date for the Harry Potter series hasn’t been revealed yet, but it’s anticipated that the wait will be worthwhile. Filming is slated to commence next year, and we can expect further updates soon. At present, all eight Harry Potter movies along with Fantastic Beasts can be streamed with a Peacock subscription.
