HBOs Green Lantern TV Show Will Not Include Josh Brolin as Hal Jordan

As a long-time fan of both Green Lantern and the intricate storytelling of detective series like True Detective, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension as Josh Brolin has passed on playing Hal Jordan in the upcoming HBO series, Lanterns. While I was initially thrilled at the prospect of seeing Brolin bring the iconic Green Lantern to life, I must admit that his decision might have saved me from the heartbreak of another beloved character being mishandled by Hollywood.

The hunt for Hal Jordan persists since Josh Brolin has declined the role of the famous Green Lantern in the HBO series titled “Lanterns.” This series, inspired by “True Detective,” is planned to be a detective show within the DCU where Hal Jordan, the renowned Green Lantern, pairs up with beloved character John Stewart, whose popularity surged due to his appearances in “Justice League” and “Justice League Unlimited.” It was previously announced that Brolin had been given the part of Hal Jordan. Known for his roles in superhero films, he portrayed Thanos in the MCU, Cable in “Deadpool 2,” and DC’s Jonah Hex in 2010.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brolin has turned down the role of Hal Jordan in HBO’s Green Lantern series, having declined the offer he received at the end of August. As the production team is now seeking a new actor for the part, filming in Atlanta is set to commence in January and run until June. The creative team behind the series includes Chris Mundy as showrunner, along with Damon Lindelof from “Watchmen” and “Lost”, as well as Eisner Award-winning comics author Tom King.

Other Actors Could Wield Green Lantern’s Light

Some fans may find it reassuring to hear that Brolin is passing on the role of Green Lantern, as there were initial concerns about his casting. While Brolin’s involvement in the DC Universe was met with excitement by many, others questioned the choice due to prior rumors suggesting Matthew McConaughey and Ewan McGregor were also considered for the part. McGregor has already appeared in a DC film as Black Mask in “Birds of Prey” (2020), which could potentially imply that any future role he might play in the DC Universe would not align with the current continuity. McConaughey, who had a small role in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” has yet to portray a superhero, but his work in “True Detective” makes him an intriguing choice for meta-stunt casting. However, it appears that neither McGregor nor McConaughey are likely to be the Green Lantern, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. If either of them were to get the part, it would confirm the earlier rumors and not just fan speculation.

If the production of Lanterns manages to finish filming from January to June 2025, it will wrap up just prior to the release of Superman in cinemas. As Superman includes another Green Lantern, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, there may be a sneak peek of events from Lanterns within it. Lanterns could potentially premiere on HBO in 2026, coinciding with the release of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Meanwhile, both 2025 and 2026 will see releases for Superman and the second season of Peacemaker. It seems that James Gunn’s DCU is shaping up with at least one movie or show per year, but there might be additional projects in store.
