As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast, I’ve been captivated by the journey of Michael Dorn‘s character, Worf. Growing up with Klingons as recurring antagonists, it was fascinating to see their transformation into complex protagonists like Worf in The Next Generation. However, it wasn’t until his transition to Deep Space Nine that I truly appreciated the impact Worf had on fans and the franchise.
In the Star Trek universe, Klingons had been present for quite some time before Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered in 1987. The original, bald-headed Klingons often appeared as adversaries in Star Trek: The Original Series. A new version with ridges was introduced in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. However, it was only with Star Trek: The Next Generation that a Klingon was portrayed positively, such as Michael Dorn’s character Worf who served on the bridge of the USS Enterprise-D. In a recent interview, Dorn shared that it took several years for him to understand the positive reception his character received from fans. Apart from discussing the reasons beyond financial aspects for reprising Worf in Star Trek: Picard Season 3, Michael Dorn revealed on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum that it wasn’t until he was brought into Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Season 4, a year after The Next Generation concluded its series and Generations, the first Next Generation film, hit theaters, that he realized Worf was making a significant impact. When Rosenbaum inquired about Dorn’s specific feelings around that period, the actor replied.
Both the creators and the audience found this character valuable, which I find unsettling since I’m good at negotiations and they don’t appreciate it. He was a valuable asset to bring back for Deep Space Nine, enhancing the show, allowing it to continue for its seven seasons. At that moment, I realized there was something unique about him.

In its first three seasons, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine boasted plenty of ties to The Next Generation. Colm Meaney, who had recurred as Miles O’Brien on the latter show, joined the cast as a main character. Additionally, both Patrick Stewart and John de Lancie made guest appearances. Later in Season 4, Michael Dorn’s character Worf became a permanent fixture on the series, remaining until Deep Space Nine ended in 1999. As it turned out, when Michael Dorn understood the extent to which the creators wanted him to portray Worf as a major TV character, that’s when he truly comprehended the significance of the Klingon Starfleet officer to fans.
During the duration of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Michael Dorn portrayed Worf not only in that series but also in First Contact and Insurrection, and later reprised his role in Nemesis, which was the final film of the Next Generation series. After the show ended, he returned to the character for various projects over the next two decades. However, when Picard’s third season arrived, Dorn reappeared as Worf on screen, but this time with a more subdued demeanor compared to his previous portrayals. Whether or not we will see Dorn play Worf again is yet to be determined, but he can take pride in the fact that he has appeared in more episodes of the franchise than any other actor.
