As a dedicated fan who has followed Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig‘s careers since their days as Oliver Queen and Bjorn Ironside respectively, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation for the potential return of “Heels”. The show was a refreshing change from their previous roles, and it left us hanging with that dramatic cliffhanger in 2023.
Heels arrived on Starz in 2021 as the first big TV gig for Stephen Amell following eight seasons of Arrow and for Alexander Ludwig after five seasons of Vikings. The show would ultimately only run for two seasons before being unceremoniously cancelled on a major cliffhanger in 2023, with uncertain fates for Jack and Ace after the elder Spade brother’s serious injury. As it turns out, though, that Starz cancellation might not be the end of the road for Heels… if the stars have their way, anyway. Both actors recently shared almost exactly the same message with fans, and it’s clear both are on board for a third season beyond the 2024 TV schedule.
The stars are active on the Heels front again with their show just weeks away from arriving on streaming for Netflix subscribers, and a big question is if the show could experience a surge of popularity like Suits did before it. Stephen Amell, who previously had a more cryptic message for fans hoping for Heels to be uncancelled, posted this on Instagram about the Netflix news:
We’re dropping 16 episodes of Heels on @netflix September 15th. I’d like to make more.
Amell is eager to expand the wrestling TV show, even though he’s set to play a role in NBC’s Suits: LA, which received a direct-to-series order. Assuming the Suits spinoff isn’t premiering until mid-2025 at the earliest, Amell will likely be occupied with that project for some time to come.
Alexander Ludwig shared almost identical sentiments on his own Instagram page. He wrote:
On September 15th, you’ll find 16 captivating episodes of our series “HEELS” streaming on Netflix. Don’t forget to mark your calendar! We hope to produce many more if the response is as great as we anticipate.
Alongside his work on a separate project, Ludwig is not currently involved in an ongoing TV series like Amell. Interestingly, the actor from “Vikings” has been cast in the horror-thriller movie “Night Comes”, which marks Jay Hernandez’s first venture into feature film directing, having previously starred on Magnum P.I. Nevertheless, Ludwig seems open to reprising his role as Ace Spade if the opportunity arises.
Is there a possibility? It isn’t unheard of for a TV show or franchise to experience a revival due to a streaming platform boost. This happened quickly with NBC’s Manifest on Netflix (and there’s still hope for a spinoff), and Suits: LA might not even be in production if the original series hadn’t been so popular among both Netflix and Peacock Premium subscribers. The success of Heels on Netflix could pave the way for another season.
Regarding the question of whether it might be too demanding for Amell to return as Jack Spade in the series “Suits: LA”, showrunner Mike O’Malley, whose show “Extended Family” was recently canceled, shared his thoughts on this matter with Entertainment Weekly.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to share that the enthusiasm for this show among everyone involved is unmatched – we all can’t wait to bring you more episodes of Heels! The positive response Suits: LA has received on Netflix will undoubtedly encourage even more viewers to immerse themselves in Stephen’s captivating work. It might surprise you, but creating a season of Heels doesn’t take too long, despite its intense labor requirements. We seize opportunities during breaks, or hiatuses, to keep crafting compelling stories for you!
Mike O’Malley appears to anticipate that “Suits: LA” will be a success in his statement, and given that Stephen Amell is likely to attract more attention on NBC as the lead of “Suits: LA” compared to what he had on The CW with “Arrow” or Starz, such an outcome seems likely. With both “Heels” potentially being revived and Amell filming a wrestling drama during his break from “Suits: LA,” it’s evident that he’s eager to take on these challenges.
Currently, the success of the show “Heels” on Netflix significantly hinges on the number of viewers willing to stream it. Starting September 15, both seasons will be accessible on Netflix. Given that there are only sixteen episodes in the entire series, watching it all at once wouldn’t require as much time as shows like “Suits” or “Manifest” did.
Additionally, you’ll discover that both Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig have a larger presence on Netflix. The entire series run of Arrow (Arrow) and Vikings are now streaming.
