As a seasoned gamer and avid comic book fan with a deep affinity for the Hellboy saga, I must admit my curiosity was piqued when Netflix brought the 2019 reboot of Hellboy into my living room. The movie had been shrouded in controversy on its initial release, but seeing it on my screen felt like finding an old friend I hadn’t seen in years.
In recent years, Netflix has transformed into a revival ground for box office failures, mysteriously attracting massive viewership to movies that initially received poor reviews or were overlooked upon their initial release. A prime example is the 2019 reboot of Hellboy, featuring David Harbour in the lead role. The director, Neil Marshall, has expressed delight over the film’s newfound popularity on Netflix.
In the upcoming reboot of “Hellboy” titled “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” director Neil Marshall recently shared with ScreenRant his thoughts on the success of the Netflix adaptation, which has received favorable responses despite its disappointing box office performance in 2019. Although “Hellboy” may not be his favorite film, he is pleased that more people have been able to enjoy it via streaming than they did in movie theaters. He stated:
“I’ve watched the trailer for ‘The Crooked Man,’ but I don’t feel comfortable commenting on someone else’s interpretation of Hellboy yet, given the backlash I faced earlier. [Laughs] It’s fantastic to see both versions finding an audience. Last weekend, I was in Spain for a film festival where they screened Hellboy in Spanish, and the audience adored it. Many fans approached me for autographs and Hellboy merchandise. Over time, it seems like we’re building a fanbase for this film. It may not be my favorite among my works, but I’m thrilled that people appreciate it. As a filmmaker, it can be challenging to separate the making of the film from the final product. But if viewers enjoy the end result without considering my experience, I couldn’t be happier.”
Hellboy: The Crooked Man is Already Dividing Opinion
Despite many Hellboy fans strongly identifying Ron Perlman as “their” Hellboy due to his portrayal in Guillermo del Toro’s movie adaptations, such loyalty often poses challenges for actors who attempt to reprise the role. This was the case with David Harbour’s interpretation, and now, even before its release, The Crooked Man is receiving vocal opinions based on the trailer itself.
In the leading role of Jack Kesy, the early responses to the first trailer for the September release were less than favorable. Some questioned if the film was intended to resemble a poorly made fan production, while others directly compared it to both del Toro and Marshall’s versions. The new adaptation of the franchise emphasizes the horror elements found in the Hellboy comics, as indicated by its R-rated rating. Despite this, there are numerous fans who need to be convinced. With creator Mike Mignola involved, one would think the film will adhere closely to the original source material. This could potentially improve the movie’s standing among viewers. However, we won’t know for sure until Hellboy: The Crooked Man is released on September 27, 2024.
