As a seasoned film enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of Hellboy on the silver screen since its inception, I must say that my anticipation for the latest installment, “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” was met with a rather underwhelming reality. Having grown up devouring the comics and being particularly fond of Guillermo del Toro’s interpretations, this new offering left me feeling more like I had been served a plate of cold spaghetti than a hearty, satisfying meal.
The verdict on the latest attempt at bringing Hellboy into live-action, , is in. And while it may not have resulted in the worst effort so far, fans of the character and the comic are likely to be disappointed nonetheless, as Hellboy: The Crooked Man has achieved a rating of just 29% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.
As a fan, I find myself in the position where the latest additions to the Hellboy franchise, including the 2019 version with David Harbour, rank quite low compared to the others. Specifically, the 2019 film scored only 17% on the Tomatometer, while The Crooked Man fares similarly poorly. In contrast, the films directed by Guillermo del Toro, such as the original Hellboy and its sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, are highly regarded. The original Hellboy is certified fresh at 81%, and the sequel does even better with a score of 86%.
Critiques for the film “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” were led by Leslie Felperin of The Guardian, who awarded it a score of 2 out of 5 and harshly criticized both the script and acting. However, they did find some positivity in Adeline Rudolph’s portrayal of rookie B.P.R.D. agent Bobbie Jo Song.

Casey Chong from Casey’s Movie Mania held a certain admiration for “The Crooked Man” due to its dedication to the source material, yet he described the overall viewing as “uninteresting.
In the second film adaptation, Hellboy sticks closely to the original comic books, yet the film’s lackluster presentation fails to compensate for this loyalty.
Ultimately, according to Dan Jolin from Empire, Hellboy: The Crooked Man received a rating of 2 out of 5. He suggested that despite being an admirable attempt, the recent reboot of Hellboy (Big Red) fell short and appeared noticeably low-budget in its execution.
Although this low-cost effort to revive Hellboy shows courage, it falls short due to a lack of narrative depth and visual flair that could elevate it beyond the obvious constraints of its limited budget.
There Has Been Praise for Jack Kesy in the Title Role
Just as the title character embodies both virtues and vices, so too does Jack Kesy’s portrayal of the comic book icon have its strengths. Dave Golder from Radio Times admired many aspects of Kesy’s performance.
Two computer-generated monster fights seem excess, but the straightforward, laid-back portrayal of Hellboy by Kesy offers a pleasant change compared to past adaptations on screen.
