As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for deciphering the intricacies of Hollywood’s ever-evolving tapestry, I must say that Henry Cavill‘s latest venture into the world of Voltron is a move that warrants both admiration and a hint of skepticism. The man has proven his mettle as a superhero, both in the DCEU and on the small screen, but it seems that 2024 has not been the kindest to our intrepid action star.
I’m thrilled to share that I’ve secured my next major venture, joining the cast of Amazon MGM’s live-action Voltron movie! After years of embodying Superman in the DCEU, it’s time for a new adventure. Despite the recent challenges with projects like Argylle and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare not meeting their mark at the box office, I’m excited to dive into this exciting opportunity. And let’s not forget my journey as Geralt of Rivia on Netflix’s The Witcher, though that chapter ended with Liam Hemsworth taking over. Here’s to new beginnings!
According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, it has been announced that Henry Cavill will be part of the cast for the upcoming movie ‘Voltron’. Alongside Cavill is Daniel Quinn-Toye, who filled in for Tom Holland during the West End production of ‘Romeo & Juliet’. The director for this project is Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for his work on Netflix’s ‘Red Notice’. As for Cavill’s role in ‘Voltron’, the specifics have yet to be revealed as the film’s details are being tightly guarded.
Back in the 1980s, “Voltron: Defender of the Universe” was a well-liked anime, originally created by merging two Japanese animations, “Beast King GoLion” and “Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV”. This series focuses on a team of pilots who control five massive lion robots. When these robots join forces, they form the colossal mech known as Voltron. Notably, Netflix and DreamWorks Animation managed to rekindle this franchise with “Voltron: Legendary Defender”, which spanned eight seasons from 2016 until 2018.
Voltron’s Long Road to the Big Screen
The idea for a real-life movie adaptation of Voltron dates back to 2005, gained momentum in 2007 after Michael Bay’s Transformers, and sparked speculation that the film Cloverfield was actually a secret Voltron project when viewers misunderstood a line as “I saw it, it’s a lion. It’s huge.” Over the years, ownership of the rights has changed hands among several studios, with Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation developing Voltron in 2016 following the success of their Netflix series. In 2022, Amazon MGM obtained the rights to Voltron and began development on a live-action feature film with Rawson Marshall Thurber serving as director.
Among two major live-action movies adapted from ’80s animated series, Amazon MGM is working on, one is “Voltron”. The other is “Masters of the Universe”, helmed by Travis Knight with Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, and Alison Brie in lead roles. Although both are set for cinematic premieres, “Voltron” has yet to announce a release date. With Cavill’s casting announcement, expect further updates on the cast and an increase in production momentum.
