Here’s What Would’ve Happened in the Axed Sequel to the Friday the 13th Reboot

It’s quite surprising, given the abundance of remakes and revivals in today’s cinematic landscape, that horror enthusiasts have waited over 15 years for a fresh story set at Camp Crystal Lake.

2009 saw the release of “Friday the 13th,” the most recent installment in the long-running slasher series known for its famous title. With a contemporary twist on the classic horror formula, this film shares its name with the original 1980 movie that started it all. Offering a fresh take on the Jason Voorhees legend, it was a box office success and seems to have set up the potential for future sequels. (You can catch it this weekend on SYFY; check out their schedule here!)

Instead of continuing the storyline, an eerie silence fell over the Voorhees horror universe following Jason’s latest killing spree on screen. Coincidentally, the next film in the series, should one ever be made, would significantly mark the 13th installment. As time went by and the 2009 movie became part of Friday the 13th legend, discussions about a sequel shifted to contemplations about the movie’s overall impact – this is how we learned more about what a potential sequel might have been like.

2009 saw the reboot of “Friday the 13th” being taken under the management of Platinum Dunes, a production company jointly owned by producers Brad Fuller and Michael Bay, who were also responsible for remakes in the early 2000s of horror series staples such as “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (2003) and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (2010).

As a diehard Friday the 13th enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about an intriguing event that took place in October of 2023. The talented duo, Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, who penned the screenplay for the 2009 film, decided to honor a genuine Friday the 13th occurrence by conducting a poll on social media. They asked fans which previously unrevealed detail about Friday the 13th they’d be most curious to discover. The fan response was overwhelmingly in favor of catching a glimpse of an unseen script for the sequel that never made it to the big screen. I, for one, can hardly wait to find out what hidden gems these talented writers have in store!

In response to their promise, Shannon and Swift provided a concise yet menacing two-page script outline for the potential slasher sequel; “a murder scene from our unproduced sequel to Friday the 13th (2009),” as they referred to it.

In the story’s continuation, possibly following the film’s initial scenes, the script provides an unsettling first encounter with Camp Crystal Lake for a camper named Val. Alone on a zipline seeking a picturesque vantage point, Val notices a man armed with a machete (portrayed by Derek Mears in the 2009 film) lurking at the other end of the zipline to greet her.

It’s too late. She’s already reached her fate.

In a typical slasher movie, what follows is remarkably inventive and gruesome. A detailed account of Val’s dissection can be found here, but in short, the machete does its job effectively – to the point that retrieving Val’s body afterwards might necessitate multiple stretchers due to the extensive damage.

Notably, the sequel to Friday the 13th also fulfilled another unfulfilled desire among fans by setting some key scenes during the winter season. As the scriptwriters clarified, “The script featured an extended opening sequence, this time in winter, followed by the rest of the movie depicting the reopening of the summer camp.

Despite no recent rumors of sequels generating excitement, it’s intriguing that the writers seem to be in tune with the same horror spirit as a typical Friday the 13th fan. Shannon and Swift commented, “I can’t wait to see @DerekMears do this one lol” while sharing Val’s harrowing zip line experience.
