Herman Miller Gaming Reveals First Ever Artist-Led Collaboration

As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for design and a deep appreciation for artistic collaboration, I must say that the Herman Miller Gaming x FAILE collection has truly caught my attention. Growing up in the era of pixelated graphics and monochrome screens, I never thought I’d witness such a fusion of gaming culture and high-end design.

In a new line of creative partnerships, Herman Miller Gaming introduces its initial collaboration – a collection conceived by the artistic duo, Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller from Brooklyn, New York, who go by the name FAILE.

This gathering includes a lineup of exclusive Joystick chairs made from painted wood, along with print versions, scheduled for debut at a showcase in New York City towards the end of this month.

12 unique designs were developed by McNeil and Miller for the gaming chairs, each showcasing their distinctive style and flair on the popular Embody model. Drawing inspiration from Herman Miller’s rich background in printmaking, they aimed to produce a piece that paid tribute to the vibrant realms of gaming while maintaining an ergonomic seating experience.

Herman Miller Gaming embraces design and innovation, they appreciate the creative journey and were eager to explore the crafting process,” FAILE shared with TopMob. “For us, the Embody Gaming Chair was akin to our approach when creating a skateboard deck, prayer wheels or an arcade cabinet as a sculptural piece. We celebrate the textures, lines, and form as our canvas, examining how color and imagery resonate with those three-dimensional aspects.

In other realms, arcade games, music, social scenes, and unique art pieces served as significant inspirations for Jon Campbell, the Vice President and General Manager at Herman Miller Gaming. Given these influences, it was a logical selection for FAILE to partner with us for our initial collaborative collection.

Speaking as gaming enthusiasts who work at Herman Miller, we realized we had a chance to introduce something unique in our community – top-tier gaming furniture. We aimed to highlight Faile’s innovative design style and influence within the gaming world through this partnership.

In the Joysticks collection, FAILE conceived 100 distinctive sculpture ideas and personally crafted them out of wood. To wrap it up, this exclusive line includes three prints, each capturing the spirit of gaming and arcade environments.

Campbell mentioned, ‘Our designs captivate by being uniquely intriguing.’ It’s not something you’ve seen before, which is precisely why we introduced this line of gaming items. Our goal is to spark curiosity in people about the limits design can reach within the realm of gaming.

Visitors in New York City’s Meatpacking District can preview the entire Herman Miller Gaming x FAILE collection from September 27 to 29, at a special installation by the brand. From October 1, 2024, you’ll be able to purchase joysticks and prints from the Herman Miller webstore. The joysticks will retail for $995 USD, while the prints are priced at $250 USD.
