How did the time pass so quickly? Despite Jackie Chan turning 71 in April, his busy schedule in Chinese cinema would make you think otherwise. It’s been some time since we last saw him in Hollywood, but he’s returning for the upcoming 2025 film “Karate Kid: Legends”! Recently, TopMob had a chat with Jackie about his stance on performing stunts himself in movies, and he expressed his readiness to dish out more punches and kicks both now and in the future.
During my conversation with Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio, and Ben Wang from the show “Karate Kid: Legends“, I inquired Jackie Chan about his current approach to stunt work and how it has evolved throughout the years. Here’s what he shared:
As a tech enthusiast, I’m thrilled by advancements in technology and AI, but for my tastes, they seem to fall short. The charm of cinema lies in the real-life performances, and I find myself yearning for that. In every meeting with directors, I express my desire: “Cast me as Iron Man, Spider-Man, or Batman, please! Let my character don a mask.” This way, I can immerse myself more in acting, delve deeper into the story rather than focusing on physical combat.
In recent years, technological advancements have significantly influenced Hollywood films, but they hold little value for this actor’s career as audiences crave seeing him engage in real combat. Jokingly, he expressed a desire to portray a masked superhero like Iron Man, Spider-Man, or Batman, as it would allow him to delve deeper into his character’s narrative aspects. However, he cannot overlook the fame he has garnered since his debut in the martial arts role of New Fist Of Fury in 1976. Continuing on, Chan added:
They argue that Jackie should perform more authentic actions, not just a single kick now. Even decades ago, he could have done a triple kick in mid-air, and later on, a double kick was possible. However, now it’s only a single kick. Yet, I am content to comply with their request. In essence, they prefer Jackie to demonstrate only one kick. Sadly, but I’m glad to oblige. Ultimately, they appreciate it. I will share this news with all my friends: “Regardless of my acting abilities, I can still fight. Every year, I produce a movie for the fans worldwide.
Chan openly acknowledged that his fighting abilities have diminished somewhat due to aging, yet this won’t deter fans from enjoying his acrobatic feats. His remarks were made following his statement to Haute Living that he would continue performing his own stunts, a commitment that remains unchanged until his retirement, which is never on the horizon. Furthermore, he told the magazine that after 64 years of practice, there’s no need for additional physical preparation; instead, it has become second nature or “muscle memory” for him.
In addition, I had a chat with Jonathan Entwistle, the director of Karate Kid: Legends. His aim was to create a film reminiscent of Jackie Chan’s early movies, with Chan reprising his role in the franchise for the first time since 2010’s The Karate Kid featuring Jaden Smith. He shared an anecdote about Chan getting hurt on the first day of shooting but bravely carrying on with filming. Entwistle also described how, during a kitchen-set fight scene, Chan picked out various sized pans to use in his signature comedic fighting style.
As a movie critic, I find myself consistently impressed by Chan’s dedication to his fans, a group that has played an integral role in his success. However, it’s not just about the action for him; he yearns to break free from the stereotype of being merely an action star. Recently, he shared with People his aspiration to be recognized as “an actor who can fight,” rather than simply labeled as an action star. He expresses a desire to avoid the monotony of always playing the same character and seeks new challenges in his craft.
Take a look at the freshly released trailer for “Karate Kid: Legends,” where Jackie Chan assists Ben Wang’s Li Fong and Ralph Macchio’s Daniel in their training. This action-packed movie will be available in theaters starting Friday, May 30. Additionally, don’t forget to grab an exclusive popcorn bucket for the premiere!
