Hogwarts Legacy Sequel: What Do We Know about it?

As a die-hard Harry Potter fan since I was a kid, the announcement of the Hogwarts Legacy sequel has me spellbound! The original game was a magical journey that allowed us to immerse ourselves in J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world once more, and the news of a follow-up has sent a wave of excitement coursing through our cauldrons.

Although J.K. Rowling’s magical universe seemed to lose some momentum after the Harry Potter films concluded, it recently scored a victory with the debut of the prequel video game titled Hogwarts Legacy last year.

Despite being newly launched just a year ago, enthusiasts can’t stop praising the game, claiming that it offers one of the most immersive Harry Potter-themed gaming adventures globally.

Within just two weeks of its debut, the game was bought by over 12 million people around the world. By October 2024, it had reached sales of 30 million units and earned a staggering $1 billion in revenue. It comes as no surprise that a follow-up has been revealed; however, details about it are currently scarce.

Hogwarts Legacy Sequel Announced

According to Variety’s latest report, developers at Avalanche Software are actively working on the next installment of Hogwarts Legacy. Moreover, it’s been mentioned that this project holds significant importance, even being described as a ‘top priority’, within Warner Bros. circles.

Details about the story remain undisclosed, however, there are rumors suggesting that the game aligns with the forthcoming Harry Potter reboot being developed by HBO.

One piece of information we have regarding the game’s link to the series is that the creators are aligning certain major narrative aspects across both titles.

What could the Sequel be About?

Just as The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power opted to create a prequel, Hogwarts Legacy chose to follow suit by setting its story a century before the Potter films, during the tail end of the 1800s. By doing this, the game can subtly incorporate numerous recognizable aspects of Hogwarts without heavily relying on already established characters as Dumbledore and Voldemort are not yet born.

In the next installment, there’s a chance that Hogwarts Legacy could progress the timeline, given their collaboration with the imminent Harry Potter reboot.

As for maintaining consistency within the storyline, the game “Legacy” aims to bridge the gap between the book and movie versions. It’s quite possible that this integration will have an impact on the aesthetic and atmosphere of the upcoming HBO remake.

Creating a game within the Harry Potter period might initially appear as an obvious choice, but it could potentially limit the game’s storyline creativity. The best scenario would be crafting a tale from the time when Harry’s parents were at Hogwarts, or perhaps moving the timeline forward and reinterpreting the events of Cursed Child – a narrative that some hardcore Harry Potter fans do not recognize as canon.

What Gameplay Elements Should be Added?

While Hogwarts Legacy grants players an opportunity to delve into the enchanting world of Hogwarts and its surroundings, it’s been pointed out that the game seems to fall short in certain areas. For instance, some find the missions to be repetitive, potentially diminishing the enjoyment as time goes by. Additionally, the absence of a Quidditch feature is disappointing for many, since playing this iconic sport would have greatly enhanced the magical school atmosphere.

Having laid the groundwork for the game, fans anticipate that its sequel will be even more grandiose. However, since Warner Bros. has yet to disclose additional information, all we can do at this point is remain patient and watch with bated breath.

Currently, Hogwarts Legacy is available to play on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4|5, personal computers (PC), and Nintendo Switch.
