Holly Marie Combs Shares the “Big Plans” Shannen Doherty Had Before Her Death

As a devoted fan of Charmed and a follower of Holly Marie Combs‘ heartfelt podcast, The House of Halliwell, I am deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Shannen Doherty. Listening to Combs recount her memories of their dear friend and former co-star brought tears to my eyes.

Holly Marie Combs shared that Shannen Doherty seemed surprised by how soon her death was approaching, as she had intended to savor every moment of what she believed would be her remaining time.

In an exclusive discussion on the “Charmed” rewatch podcast “The House of Halliwell,” Holly Marie Combs shared with Brian Krause and Drew Fuller that she and Alyssa Milano believed they had “more to achieve” as friends, since they held “ambitious goals for this year.”

“Combs shared that She hadn’t planned on traveling anywhere soon, but he added that Doherty was intending to visit Italy and was even thinking about relocating there. It was amusing to Combs that Fuller had returned from his Italian vacation in a hurry following the news of his ex-colleague’s demise.”

On July 13, Doherty passed away at the age of 53, following a lengthy fight against cancer. Fuller reminisced about Doherty’s spirit as her health deteriorated, recognizing her unique gift: her knack for making those around her forget she was ill, with an unwavering resolve that kept her from being defined by her sickness.

Fuller went on, “You seemed to overlook it when she was around. It was almost as if you forgot that she wasn’t ill. Instead, she appeared vibrant and full of life, brimming with exciting ideas. We discussed traveling the globe, constructing a new home in Tennessee, and even contemplated living in Italy. She carried herself with an aura of permanence, as if she intended to stay with us for the long haul.”

In memory of Doherty, Combs expressed her desire to obtain a tattoo displaying the hour of her deceased friend’s last moment. This is her way of dealing with the disappointment that they believed they had more time together and held numerous plans, which she hopes to fulfill on her friend’s behalf.

During an interview, Combs mentioned a heartwarming incident between Doherty and Rose McGowan at Houston’s Comicpalooza. They had a lovely dinner together, all by themselves. (Doherty was originally on Charmed before leaving the series, and McGowan took her place.)

“She shared that their connection had grown stronger than ever, creating a heartfelt and significant bond between them. Rose has been providing comfort to her during this difficult time. She advised me, ‘Keep in mind that she’s always with you, and you must carry on for both of you.'”

In the same podcast episode, Combs shared that Doherty expressed a preference not to be known as “the actress who had cancer.” Instead, she wanted to be celebrated for her work in animal activism. One of Doherty’s last initiatives in this area was attempting to create a sanctuary for wild horses.

Combs shared that she’s working on a documentary about seal pups, which Doherty expressed interest in before her passing. “We’ll include her name in the credits as a tribute, since I already sense what she would have guided me to do,” she explained.
