As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for movies that pack a punch, I can confidently say that Million Dollar Baby is a cinematic gem that truly stands the test of time. Clint Eastwood, the maestro behind the lens, once again demonstrated his extraordinary talent in directing this poignant boxing drama.
It was surprising that “Million Dollar Baby” would captivate audiences to such an extent 20 years ago, given its premise. Fresh from the success of the 2003 Oscar-winning film “Mystic River,” Clint Eastwood directed and co-starred in this boxing drama as coach Frankie, initially reluctant to train Maggie (played by Hilary Swank).
Initially hard to secure funding, the movie Million Dollar Baby was eventually backed by Clint Eastwood’s usual studio, Warner Bros., who contributed around half of its approximately $25 million budget. The remaining portion was covered by Lakeshore Entertainment.
In doubt, Clint Eastwood questioned if Hilary Swank, who won an Oscar for her role in 1999’s “Boys Don’t Cry”, possessed the right physical stature. As he put it then, “She was as light as a feather.” However, what transpired was that she demonstrated an exceptional work ethic.
Without a doubt, the actress dedicated almost five hours daily to her training and put on 19 extra pounds. In the midst of this rigorous routine, Swank contracted a potentially fatal staphylococcus infection in her foot, but she chose not to inform Eastwood about it to remain faithful to her character.
Robert Lorenz, the executive producer, shares how they faced the difficulty of generating large crowds on a limited budget. The team resorted to using clever lighting techniques and even inflatable stand-ins as extras. Clint Eastwood’s efficient work style was admired by the crew, as he required few takes and completed filming in July 2004, after less than a month. However, Lorenz recalls that the studio initially had no plans to release the movie that year.
Lorenz explained to The Hollywood Reporter that they were told, “We aren’t running a campaign.” Clint simply replied, “That’s fine. Let’s go ahead and release it anyway.” This became a significant factor in its success since no critic had yet found a film to strongly support during that year.
On December 15, 2004, Warner Bros. unveiled the movie “Million Dollar Baby.” This film garnered an impressive $216 million globally, with The Hollywood Reporter’s review describing it as “one of the rare movies that can be classified as both uplifting and tragic.” The controversial theme of euthanasia stirred up discussions, with some disability advocates arguing against the idea that disability signifies the end of life. Despite this controversy, the film’s profound human story struck a chord, leading to it winning four Oscars: best picture, director, actress for Hillary Swank, and supporting actor for Morgan Freeman.
Actor V.J. Foster, who portrayed a referee, expressed some doubts about the movie’s impact due to its emotional climax. However, he was delighted that it managed to resonate with viewers. Foster, who later starred in Clint Eastwood’s 2006 film Flags of Our Fathers, praises Eastwood as a warm and accessible individual, describing him as easygoing, friendly, and down-to-earth.
Accepting his Oscar for the film “Million Dollar Baby”, Eastwood, who was 74 at the time and has his latest movie, “Juror #2“, currently showing in theaters, jokingly remarked, “I feel like I’m just getting started. There’s still a lot more I want to accomplish.
