As a seasoned entertainment journalist with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Chicago is about to be the epicenter of excitement and star-studded events! With heavyweights like Connie Britton, Don Cheadle, and Danielle Brooks gracing the city, it’s shaping up to be a week that the Windy City will remember for quite some time.
As the global community anticipates potential involvement of stars like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé in the groundbreaking bid to elect Kamala Harris as president, information is emerging about the group of famous figures who plan to visit Chicago next week for the Democratic National Convention.
In August 2024, the Democratic National Convention (DNC) will serve as a gathering point for Democrats from every U.S. state and territory. This event, scheduled from the 19th to the 22nd, aims to rally support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential bid, alongside her vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz. The main events will be held at Chicago’s United Center, with additional party activities taking place at McCormick Place Convention Center. This grand event is a joint effort between the Democratic National Committee, the Chicago host committee, the City of Chicago, and the State of Illinois. It’s estimated that around 50,000 people will visit Chicago for this occasion, including 5,000 delegates and alternates, and approximately 15,000 members of the media.
Visitors attending the DNC in Chicago next week will find numerous opportunities to discuss U.S. politics informally at events associated with official activities. According to an online event guide, over 100 events are scheduled, featuring a diverse lineup of celebrities such as John Legend, Jon Stewart, Joan Jett, Octavia Spencer, DJ D-Nice, Lil Jon, and stars from RuPaul’s Drag Race, among others.
Ever since the Republican National Convention back in July, there’s been a lot of buzz about who’ll be gracing the stage in the Midwest. With names like Amber Rose, Hulk Hogan, Jason Aldean, Savannah Chrisley from reality TV, Kid Rock, Dana White, and Lee Greenwood being mentioned, it’s definitely got people talking! Come election season, everyone will be watching closely to see how they’ll use the glitz of Hollywood on that stage. It’s an interesting time, as voters have been vocal about their concerns being inflation, the economy, and cost of living. I can’t wait to see it all unfold!
Jon Stewart and his crew from Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” will relocate to the Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture, where they’ll stay throughout the entire DNC convention from August 19th to the 22nd. Stewart will begin the week with a live show on Monday, featuring his regular hosts and an exceptional news team taking over for the rest of the week. As per ticket sales, the final night’s broadcast is expected to stretch late into the evening (ending around 11:45 p.m. local time) and may well be the most glamorous night of the convention.
The Creative Coalition, headed by Robin Bronk, has announced plans for a lineup of events arranged by their nonpolitical arts and entertainment advocacy group. Under the leadership of president Tim Daly and CEO Bronk, they’ve confirmed that they have secured a delegation consisting of Uma Thurman, Uzo Aduba, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Yvette Nicole Brown, Anthony Anderson, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Busy Philipps, Jon Cryer, David Cross, Yolonda Ross, Iain Armitage, Chris Witaske, and Danai Gurira.
According to Thurman’s representative, she regrettably can’t attend the event in person due to work obligations. However, she plans to show up for the convention’s closing night next week. Ralph is currently busy working on the Emmy-winning series “Abbott Elementary,” but his participation is confirmed. Brown, who frequently engages in political activism and various industry causes, has a packed schedule with numerous events in Chicago, as per her team. Confirmed attendees include Aduba, Ferguson, Philipps, Anderson, Gurira, Cryer, and others. Sources suggest that Connie Britton might make an appearance, and there’s a possibility that Don Cheadle could be present in Chicago as well. (The Hollywood Reporter)
On August 20th (Tuesday), Creative Coalition will organize a VIP welcome dinner at the Whitehall Hotel. The next day, on August 21st, the same organization will host an Empower Policy Luncheon at Palmer House Hotel, which they’re sponsoring with Full Sail University. This luncheon is billed as a leadership event and is expected to be attended by C-level executives and policy pioneers from Fortune 500 companies, entertainment industry, Silicon Valley, and policy sectors. The hotel will also host “The Case for Kindness,” an evening reception on August 21st, which is being organized by Creative Coalition in collaboration with Articulus Entertainment. This event honors trailblazers and groundbreakers from various fields and special interest groups.
The grand finale for the Creative Coalition’s eventful week is a benefit gala concert at Chicago’s Ramova Theatre on Halsted Street, scheduled for Wednesday, August 21st. As reported by The New York Times, which described it as a strong contender for the biggest and best party of the week, this concert will be jointly hosted by Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer and in collaboration with Reproductive Freedom for All, End Citizens United, and Gabrielle Giffords’ gun safety organization. The marquee will feature Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Drive-By Truckers, and SistaStrings. According to The New York Times, Gurira, Armitage, Aduba, Giffords, and her Senator husband from Arizona, Mark Kelly, are expected to attend. Previous editions of this gala concert have seen performances by acts such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sting, the Black Eyed Peas, Journey, Elvis Costello, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Melissa Etheridge.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited about the upcoming events in Chicago! Next week, on Tuesday, August 20th, Legend, who rocked the stage at the Lincoln Memorial after President Biden and Vice President Harris’s inauguration, will be headlining a show at Salt Shed, hosted by billionaire Illinois governor JB Pritzker.
On Thursday evening, the Salt Shed will also stage a unique Pod Save America gathering. The political podcast, led by ex-aides of President Barack Obama – Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Dan Pfeiffer, and Tommy Vietor – is set to take place. As further DNC details emerge, this story will be updated accordingly.
