As a longtime observer of Hollywood and its political landscape, I have seen my fair share of twists and turns. But the recent turn of events surrounding Joe Biden’s campaign and the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump has left me in disbelief and disappointment.
An attempt on Donald Trump’s life during a rally on Saturday resulted in tragic and ironic outcomes. Sadly, one of Trump’s supporters lost their life, while two others were injured. Surprisingly, this failed assassination attempt may have dealt a fatal blow to the “Dump Joe Biden” movement, at least among some generous donors in Hollywood.
The executive from a reputed agency shared with Hot Source on the day following the incident, “We’ve missed our opportunity, and there’s currently no enthusiasm for significant actions that could add more instability and complications to this competition. Most donors seem to agree that we should stick with our current plan and present our case strongly, hoping for an unexpected turn of events.”
In recent weeks, following Biden’s lengthy lapse during his debate with Trump, several prominent Hollywood figures have openly urged him to withdraw from the presidential race. An op-ed by George Clooney in The New York Times attracted considerable press, expressing doubt over Biden being the same Joe Biden of 2020. Similar sentiments were expressed by Rob Reiner on social media, Michael Douglas on The View, Damon Lindelof in Deadline, Reed Hastings via email to The Times, and Ari Emanuel at the Aspen Ideas Festival, who frankly stated “We are in trouble.”
Currently, the shooting incident in Pennsylvania has dampened the Democratic Party’s momentum to replace President Biden. Consequently, some Democrats in Hollywood are assessing the situation and searching for potential causes. Among those under scrutiny is Jeffrey Katzenberg, a former DreamWorks co-founder, Quibi co-creator, and presently Biden’s campaign co-chair. For quite some time, Katzenberg has boasted about his close relationship with the President and reassured supporters that Biden was in excellent mental condition. Although Biden’s recent press conference alleviated concerns for some, others remain skeptical.
“A prominent Hollywood benefactor confided in Hot Source, ‘People are very displeased.’ Katzenberg requested substantial donations and when contributors voiced concerns about the President’s wellbeing, he reassured them with repeated denials. However, it was later revealed that these assurances were false.”
Another top Hollywood executive expressed it this way: “Jeffrey saw Biden as a lively character he could promote to the public. However, there’s genuine animosity towards him.”
Jeffrey has been acting in ways that go beyond what the campaign has planned. His arrogance knows no bounds.” could be: “Moreover, Jeffrey’s actions surpass the campaign’s expectations, and his overbearing self-importance is off the charts.”
Some people who interacted with Hot Source express that Katzenberg, feeling the aftermath of Quibi’s disappointing performance in 2020, attempted to use his political clout in the Biden campaign as a means to restart his career. As another Hollywood executive puts it, “Katzenberg has always been in the background, with Spielberg and Geffen taking on more prominent roles. He’s like the younger sibling eager to prove himself to his older brothers.”
Some people in town aren’t participating in the commotion surrounding Katzenberg. However, one notable individual and old friend of Katzenberg’s is speaking up in support of him.
Barry Diller, IAC chairman and longtime Democratic contributor, spoke highly of Jeffrey Katzenberg to Hot Source. According to Diller, Katzenberg has been an exceptional fundraiser and booster for the President, demonstrating loyalty and sensitivity in handling challenging situations. He emphasized that Katzenberg has never deceived anyone.
Katzenberg himself has not responded to requests for comment.
