As a seasoned fan of the Game of Thrones saga, I’ve witnessed the rise and fall of countless houses, and I must say, the latest season of House of the Dragon has been nothing short of exhilarating. The intricate web of political machinations, family feuds, and dragon-riding action has kept me on the edge of my seat.
In the final episode of “House of the Dragon” that airs on Max, both Team Black and Team Green have made considerable strides that will influence the ongoing conflict. In the second-to-last episode, Rhaenrya recruits lowborn Targaryen descendants, or dragonseeds, to join her side, thereby increasing her dragonrider numbers. However, Jacaerys Targaryen (Harry Collett) expresses strong displeasure at Rhaenrya’s strategy, despite it being a concept he originally suggested back in Season 2, Episode 5.
After the demise of Rhaenys, Meleys, and Daemon’s intentions regarding the Iron Throne remaining uncertain, Team Black needs more dragons to have a fighting chance against Aemond Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar. Rhaenryra’s choice to rally the commoners for dragon ownership stirs tension between herself and Jacaerys, as it resurfaces old rumors that once posed a threat to their lives.
The Sowing of the Seeds Calls Jacaerys’ Legitimacy Into Question… Again
Under Aemond’s rule as temporary ruler, Rhaenys finds herself increasingly cornered. Two formidable dragons belong to Team Black, yet their value is nullified since there’s no one to tame them in this conflict. Reminiscent of “Fire & Blood” by George R.R. Martin, Jace suggests to his mother that they should look for potential dragonriders among the other noble families of Westeros. This search is necessitated as the Targaryens have intermarried with these houses for political reasons.
Although the series portrays Jace as less excited when discussing the potential of Targaryen bastard children, this apprehension significantly shapes his character development due to his lingering insecurities about his birth origins. Throughout his life, these doubts have tormented him, and his interaction with Rhaenrya regarding her relationship with Ser Harwin Strong reveals his dread and makes it tangible. As the only illegitimate Targaryen capable of wielding a dragon, he assumed his legitimacy was assured; however, the possibility that other illegitimate children could also claim a dragon altered everything. This revelation weakens House Targaryen’s sacred authority and his claim as Rhaenrya’s rightful heir, causing concern.
House of the Dragon Depicts the Threat to His Claim to the Iron Throne
In a heartfelt conversation with Rhaenrya, Jaecerys brings up an important point they haven’t talked about yet: what might happen after her demise. History shows that successions can be disputed, and Jaecerys warns that his claim to the Iron Throne upon her death could also face challenges. The realm might reject him due to doubts over his lineage and the whispers about him that people have heard but dared not voice for fear of their lives.
In my perspective, it’s clear that I harbor resentment towards Rhaenys for her connection with Harwin, as I implore her to reconsider her intentions. The notion that dragonseeds can claim dragons, which in my eyes undermines my value as a Targaryen, is deeply upsetting because it places me on par with them. This perceived devaluation of my identity also casts doubt on my claim to the Seven Kingdoms, a matter that has long been a source of concern for me.
Foreshadowing Betrayals From the Dragonseeds
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel uneasy about Jacaerys’ interaction with Hugh Hammer and Ulf White, the so-called dragonseeds who have taken Vermithor and Silverwing under their wing. His cool demeanor towards these newcomers might signal a change in allegiance during the Dance of the Dragons.
The events ahead are crucial as the conflict continues, with both dragons and riders ready for bloodshed. In the finale of House of Dragon Season 2, it’s evident that all parties are gearing up for war, marching towards battle. Rhaenyra has shown her readiness to sacrifice innocents to halt future bloodshed, and it seems inevitable that full-scale war will erupt in Season 3.
