As a huge fan of House of the Dragon, I was just as surprised as Steve Toussaint (the brilliant actor who brings Lord Corlys Velaryon to life) when I discovered his character’s shocking secret about his infidelity and illegitimate sons. The intrigue surrounding Corlys’ mysterious past only added to the show’s suspense, making it even more captivating for viewers.
The following article has spoilers for House of the Dragon.
Steve Toussaint, the actor portraying Lord Corlys Velaryon in “House of the Dragon,” was equally surprised as fans when he discovered his character had been unfaithful to Rhaenys and had fathered two illegitimate sons. Infidelity is commonplace in the world of “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones”; Jon Snow’s maternal lineage being a notable example. While fans often anticipate such plot twists, Corlys’ secret still came as an unexpected and impressive revelation for Toussaint himself.
Starting from season 2 of “House of the Dragon,” fans have been intrigued by Corlys’ frequent interactions with unfamiliar characters. His elusive nature was further emphasized when Rhaenys was killed, and he was depicted mourning the loss of his wife and a significant show character. In episode 5, Rhaenyra asked Corlys to become her Hand, and in the subsequent episode, we witnessed him accepting the position. However, it was later revealed that Corlys had an extramarital affair, which resulted in repercussions.
Toussaint explains to TVLine that he was also shocked at the blow to his character’s integrity:
As someone who has spent the past year-and-a-half deeply involved in promoting a show, I can relate to the shock and disbelief that comes with reading something that challenges your long-held beliefs. When I first read the script in question, I found myself reacting exactly as the speaker did – with a surprised “Excuse me?!”
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: I don’t just have one illegitimate son hiding in the shadows, but two – Alyn, portrayed by Abubakar Salim, and Addam, brought to life by Clinton Liberty. Rhaenyra’s actress, Eve Best, seemed to grasp my character’s enigmatic side regarding this matter.
From my perspective, I initially thought I had it all figured out: one child, a sailor, simple enough. But then he surprised us both by having another child. This new development left me feeling puzzled and uncertain. In our numerous conversations, Eve suggested that this second child might have been quite significant in his life. At first, I dismissed the idea, but upon reflection, I’ve come to believe there may be some truth to it. We’ll likely delve deeper into this aspect of his character at a later point in time. My current understanding is limited, but I’m open to exploring the possibilities.
Corlys Velaryon’s New Heirs Are More Than Just a Plot Device
Previously, Alyn and Addam had been involved in Corlys’ endeavors, implying a significant connection. However, it was only in the sixth episode, named “Smallfolk,” that we learned they are indeed Corlys’ sons. Alyn gained recognition for saving Corlys’ life in an earlier scene, but this episode also showed him shaving his head to hide his true hair color – a Valyrian trait. Ultimately, their lineage proved crucial when Seasmoke, the unruly dragon, selected Addam as its rider after appearing out of control.
As a passionate fan, I can’t help but express my excitement for Rhaenyra as she manages to find a new dragon rider among the Targaryen lineage. We’ve all been through the heart-wrenching events of the past, where a tragic attempt at dragon riding resulted in a devastating firestorm and Seasmoke retreating to his lair. But now, with Corlys as the new rider and Seasmoke seemingly allied with him, there’s renewed hope for Rhaenyra. Although more dragons are available, Rhaenyra’s chances have significantly improved. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and eagerly anticipate the upcoming episode to witness how Seasmoke performs in battle.
