As a true crime enthusiast who has followed Amanda Knox‘s captivating story since her days as a student abroad, I couldn’t be more thrilled to see her joining the cast of “Laid”. The way the character of AJ, who shares my obsession with true crime, mirrors Knox’s real-life detective-like pursuit of truth, is nothing short of fascinating.
The creators of the show, “Laid,” are overjoyed to announce that Amanda Knox is part of the cast for the upcoming Peacock comedy series.
Based on an Australian series of the same title, the show revolves around Ruby (Stephanie Hsu), who discovers that her ex-lovers are mysteriously passing away. Intrigued by this odd occurrence, she embarks on a journey to uncover the truth behind it. Zosia Mamet plays Ruby’s close friend AJ in the series, while Michael Angarano and Tommy Martinez are also part of the cast.
A noteworthy character among the ensemble is Knox, who shows up in the last episode of the first season that’s now available for streaming. Knox gained notoriety following her initial conviction and later acquittal for the 2007 murder of her roommate in Italy. Co-showrunner Sally Bradford McKenna, a true-crime enthusiast, felt that Knox was perfectly suited for the part due to the series’ narrative.
Bradford McKenna admits he’s deeply fascinated by Knox, much like how the fictional character AJ is drawn to true crime. In fact, it was perfect for AJ to take on the role of a detective in this show, investigating and trying to unravel the mystery at hand.
The former Goldbergs cast member added, “We sensed we were approaching a significant turning point that required a dramatic action. We felt she was ideal for the role, not just because our series is based in Seattle, but also because we were seeking someone with a true crime background yet acquitted of their charges. She was more than willing and enthusiastic about the part. Additionally, she has a sense of humor and was thrilled to take on this challenge. She was truly outstanding, and she proved to be an excellent actress as well.
Bradford McKenna, who jointly oversees the production of “Laid” with Nahnatchka Khan, recognized a parallel between Knox’s journey and the motifs underlying Hsu’s character. She commented on Knox, “Her narrative is a deeply troubling one, set against the contrast of a young woman in her 20s, studying abroad, and seeking love and relationships. This aligns quite well with Ruby’s story.
Back in 2009, I along with my then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were wrongly convicted for the murder of Meredith Kercher, who was my roommate in Italy and tragically found dead in our shared apartment two years prior. Fortunately, our convictions were overturned in 2011, but later we faced another trial where we were once again found guilty. Thankfully, in 2015, the Supreme Court of Cassation in Italy finally exonerated us. Now, Margaret Qualley will portray my life story in an upcoming series on Hulu.
In the movie “Laid,” when AJ asks Knox about her experience of being imprisoned for a crime she claims to be innocent of, Knox replies sarcastically, “Oh, I’d definitely advise against it.
As a big fan, I can’t help but sing praise for Hsu’s exceptional talent in making us empathize with a seemingly unsympathetic character like Ruby, as noted by Bradford McKenna.
As a die-hard fan, I can tell you that when it came to selecting Ruby’s actress, we wanted someone who immediately captures your heart, someone you instantly want to cheer for. We wrote with this in mind, but the truth is, a large part of it was all thanks to Stephanie’s casting. She has such an irresistible charm and likability that simply draws you in.
