How ‘Anora’ Filmmaker Sean Baker Pulled Off an Oscar Feat That’s Happened Only a Few Times in History

Warren Beatty. Alan Menken. Chloe Zhao. Alfonso Cuarón.

The list of people who’ve received four nominations for the same film is extremely short.

On Thursday, Sean Baker, the filmmaker behind Anora, achieved an extraordinary feat – he secured nominations in not just the usual three categories (director, picture, and original screenplay), but also added another one (editing) to his list.

Baker found it hard to believe when The Hollywood Reporter spoke with him on Thursday, as many of those featured were his idols, he admitted. He had thought that the subject matter of his stripper-themed action comedy was no longer popular.”

Or, in a more conversational style:

“Baker couldn’t believe it when I talked to him on Thursday and saw all his heroes on the list! He even joked that he didn’t think anyone would be interested in his stripper-themed action comedy anymore.

In a different conversation, Mikey Madison praised Baker as “truly unique.” While this isn’t an exact description, it’s not too inaccurate.

Every year, Walt Disney often earned multiple Oscar nominations from various films. In contrast, Francis Ford Coppola secured five nominations in 1975, split between two different movies. Similarly, Bong Joon-ho visited the Oscar stage four times for his film “Parasite” in 2020; however, the fourth win was for the international award, recognizing the country where the movie originated.

Notably, even individuals who’ve followed the four-step process, such as Beatty, managed to succeed with films like “Heaven Can Wait” (1979) and “Reds” (1982). His accomplishments were largely due to his exceptional acting abilities.

Despite Baker not performing any actions, he couldn’t make it through that route. Similar to Zhao in 2021 with “Nomadland”, he managed to achieve the diamond, ace, jack, and heart using editing as his tools.

Few contemporary directors undertake that particular job, but Baker has always taken a different approach; he’s the one who’s edited all eight of his own feature films.

He emphasized that editing is equally crucial as both writing and directing; in fact, it’s a vital third step. Laughing, he added, ‘I don’t want to appear overly controlling. It’s simply how I work on my projects.’

Twice within every five years, the nomination event showcases the Academy’s inclination towards recognizing independent filmmakers who often assume multiple roles in their productions, contrasting with those involved in larger projects. It’s worth noting that no contemporary director has achieved five nominations for a single movie.

Out of the four individuals who had previously won four Oscars, Zhao and Cuarón were awarded two more Oscars in that particular year. Baker could potentially break their record as March 2 approaches.
