As a longtime fan of “Chicago Fire“, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu with the latest addition to Kelly Severide’s family tree. It seems that Severide’s got more half-siblings than a Greek soap opera! But seriously, who knew being the son of a firefighter could land you so many siblings?

In about three weeks, the TV series “Chicago Fire” will be back on our screens with a brand new season. The people in charge of the show have started giving fans hints about the changes that will occur following the surprising revelation from the Season 12 finale about Kelly Severide (Jesse Spencer) and Jack Damon (Michael Bradway). To remind you, Damon disclosed that they’re half-brothers due to their late abusive father, Benny (Treat Williams), and this information left Kelly stunned.
The return of Benny at a time when Kelly regains his footing, resumes his romantic relationship with Stella, and even considers parenthood stirs up showrunner Andrea Newman. She mentioned this feeling before Season 13 premiered, stating it resembles a ‘haunted’ season. The theme seems to revolve around characters dealing with their past demons. For Severide, who has made great strides in distancing himself from his father and establishing his own identity as a firefighter, the sudden appearance of Benny’s son and half-brother brings up old issues. This means Severide will have to revisit those matters, leading to complex and intriguing interactions between them, with many developments expected in their relationship during the early stages of the season.
Instead of expecting sibling bonding between the Severide brothers, it seems fans will witness some intense familial turmoil or secrets instead. However, this isn’t an unprecedented situation for Kelly, as she has faced similar challenges when a new, unforeseen half-sibling emerges on the scene.
Jack’s not Kelly Severide’s only half-sibling
For long-standing “Chicago Fire” viewers, it’s worth remembering that Kelly Severide discovered he had another half-sibling, Katie Nolan (portrayed by Brittany Curran). Katie is one of Benny Severide’s children, and when Kelly encounters her in Season 2, their relationship starts off on a bumpy note. Due to shared experiences of growing up with Benny, Katie initially hesitates to get acquainted with Kelly. However, over time, they manage to find mutual understanding.
Instead of just being cordial, Kelly and Katie grow very close. He even attends her culinary school graduation and presents her to his colleagues at the firehouse. After a brief relationship with Otis (Yuriy Sardarov), she decides to move on to a new city when Vince Keeler kidnaps her. Katie reappears during Season 7, following Benny’s death, giving Kelly a chance to introduce her to Stella. It seems that they have remained friends since she left town, as indicated by their conversation about old times together. Currently, Katie is working in Colorado as a sous chef and does not return for Kelly and Stella’s wedding or Otis’ funeral.
It remains to be seen whether we’ll ever witness the simultaneous presence of all three Severides, but it’s clear that Kelly is no stranger to the complexities of half-sibling dynamics when “Chicago Fire” resumes on September 25.
