How Deadpool Made Hugh Jackman Regret His Worst Wolverine Decision

As a die-hard fan who has followed Hugh Jackman‘s illustrious career for what feels like eternity, I can wholeheartedly say that his return to the role of Wolverine in “Deadpool and Wolverine” is nothing short of a dream come true. The way he gracefully navigated through the labyrinth of Hollywood to make this comeback is nothing short of inspiring. It’s like watching a master chef prepare a dish that has been on the menu for years, only to discover it has been given a fresh twist that elevates it to new heights.

After officially hanging up my Wolverine claws played by Hugh Jackman, it didn’t take long for me to start second-guessing my decision. You see, I’d been embodying the adamantium-infused mutant for 17 years by then – from the 2000 “X-Men” all the way to Logan’s heroic demise in 2017. However, watching Ryan Reynolds bring Deadpool to life so brilliantly in the 2016 movie made me question my choice.

Jackman shared with Fandango (through FandomWire) that he had only been about 10 minutes into watching ‘Deadpool 1’, a screening arranged by Ryan, when suddenly thoughts of Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy filled his mind. He had recently announced that ‘Logan’ would be his last role, but here he was, just 10 minutes in, and all he could see were those two faces. Feeling somewhat contradictory, Jackman said he quickly pushed aside any doubts about his decision.

Jackman was hinting that he was thinking about creating a movie reminiscent of “48 Hrs.” with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy, where Nolte played a cop and Murphy was a convict. He envisioned a film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine instead, but knew he couldn’t go back on his word to retire the character of Logan (Wolverine) at that particular moment.

Jackman was desperate to join Deadpool 3

In five years’ time, it will be 2022, and Hugh Jackman’s Logan appears to have hung up his claws for good. However, during this interval, Disney, Marvel Studios’ parent company, has taken over 20th Century Fox, gaining control of all the Marvel characters that Fox previously owned – such as Deadpool, Wolverine, and the entire X-Men mutant universe. With “Deadpool 3” officially announced as a Marvel Studios production in 2022, Jackman found himself revisiting his regrettable choice.

“While driving recently, a strong, sudden realization hit me deep within – I wanted to work with Ryan on this movie,” Jackman shared with Fandango. Although he declared his retirement from Logan in 2017, the thought of collaborating with Ryan Reynolds remained lingering in his mind. “I felt that the fans were eager for it,” he added. “Since I first donned the claws, there’s been chatter about these two characters, and that desire had always stayed with me, but now I just knew.”

It turned out that Jackman thought “Deadpool 3” was already in production when he contacted Reynolds. However, Reynolds wasn’t filming at all, and in fact, he and director Shawn Levy were struggling to find a story they were satisfied with. Upon arriving, Jackman immediately called Reynolds and said, “Let’s do it.” He hadn’t even talked to his agent yet, but felt so excited about the project that he had to commit before discussing it further with his representative.

This is not the same old Wolverine

Indeed, it’s common knowledge among those who have watched “Deadpool and Wolverine” that the Wolverine portrayed in the movie isn’t the one who met his end in “Logan.” Instead, the Logan Deadpool enlists for his mission to preserve his timeline is referred to as “the most unfortunate Wolverine.” This particular Logan hails from another reality where he dismally failed the X-Men and has since been consumed by remorse and excessive drinking.

The question at hand is whether Logan, who manages to redeem himself and aids in the rescue of all timelines by the conclusion of “Deadpool and Wolverine,” will continue his appearance or not. In an interview with Collider, Ryan Reynolds stated that the team-up was “truly intended as a standalone event.” On the other hand, when Hugh Jackman was asked about potential future appearances in the same interview, he replied, “Regardless of how I respond to this question… because I’m undeniably a liar. However, the beauty of my deception lies in the fact that I wholeheartedly believed it.”

It turns out that despite his initial thoughts, Hugh Jackman was given another chance to reconsider playing Wolverine, a role he might continue to revisit up until age 90 if plans by Disney and Marvel come to fruition – as Deadpool humorously points out in the movie.
