How Does Juliette Survive Leaving the Silo?

As a seasoned critic with a penchant for dystopian narratives, I must admit that Silo has truly captured my imagination. The tale of Juliette, a woman who finds herself alone in a post-apocalyptic world, is one that resonates deeply with me. Having spent countless hours in my own solitude, I can empathize with her struggles and triumphs.

‘I need some fresh air.’ If anyone says these words in the enclosed community depicted in Silo, Apple TV+ series, it likely spells doom for them, except for Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson). In the first season of this science fiction dystopian drama, Juliette wasn’t voluntarily seeking the outdoors but was compelled to go due to a misleading assumption that she had requested. Dressed in protective gear, sprayed with a chemical, and led out, it appeared that her fate was sealed.

However, in contrast to what was shown at the end of Season 1, she chose not to perform the task of cleaning the camera lens, which is mandatory for those who are leaving. Instead, she continued walking, each step potentially her last. Yet, it turned out differently. Upon reaching a hill, she beheld something astonishing: numerous silos buried underground surrounding her in every direction.

From the trailer for Season 2 and making logical assumptions as the main character, it’s clear that Juliette didn’t meet her demise. However, one might wonder about the circumstances. The answer to this intriguing question is revealed in the Season 2 premiere.

Fans understand why Juliette lived longer than others who went out to clean – it’s because her friend and mentor Martha Walker (Marriet Walter), an accomplished electrical engineer, collaborated with Carla (Clare Perkins) in the supply department to replace the heat tape on Juliette’s suit. She suspected that the malfunctioning heat tape was the problem, and believed this would at least extend Juliette’s survival time. And she was correct.

At the end of Season 1, Juliette discovers that the lush, verdant scenery seen through her helmet’s lens isn’t a true representation of reality. Instead, the barren land is what actually exists, suggesting the world above ground has perished as the authorities in the silo had claimed. However, she now understands there are other silos, which piques her curiosity. Moreover, she realizes that if she can manage to reach and enter another location, she might once again experience fresh air, a prospect that fills her with hope.

Delving through a horde of fallen comrades, former inhabitants from the nearby silo who dared to venture out amidst an uprising, I chanced upon an inviting entryway. Stepping cautiously inside through one threshold, I wasn’t fully within the new shelter just yet.

Engineering Saves Lives. You Heard It Here First

Here, Juliette demonstrates her exceptional engineering prowess, turning into a resourceful problem-solver akin to MacGyver, as she devises a plan to escape on her own. Spotting the heat tape starting to fray and lose effectiveness, she grows anxious due to the ticking clock. With little time left, she ingeniously maneuvers various items nearby into an arrangement that allows her to apply enough force to open stuck doors.

This physics involves concepts that aren’t typically familiar to an average person, as demonstrated by Juliette’s ingenious use of a wedge on a door for leverage. Her action serves as a powerful illustration for aspiring young women in engineering and other STEM fields, showcasing her exceptional intellect.

Upon entering, Juliette is struggling to breathe and must take off her helmet, which is attached to her suit. Desperately, she searches for a blunt tool and carefully breaks the protective glass cover without injuring herself until an opening wide enough for breathing is made. Then, she tears the suit apart and removes her helmet.

After ensuring her safety, Juliette ventures into the deserted silo. She spots a fallen bridge obstructing her path to another area. Employing her exceptional engineering know-how, she devises various strategies to traverse from one side to the other. To start with, she ties a heavy rope to the edge and plans to descend the side using it as a grappling hook, swinging until she builds enough momentum to reach the other side. Unfortunately, the rope snaps (or has been cut?) and she falls what appears to be a fatal distance.

Fortunately, the ground floor was flooded, and just moments away from drowning, Juliette discovered a stray suitcase which she used as a floatation device. She then climbed up the wall, inch by inch, and managed to reach safety. Later on, she collected various odd items scattered about and attempted to construct a bridge. Amazingly, she devised a pulley system to move it across, but unfortunately, it wasn’t robust enough to support her weight, and it crumbled before she could safely cross over to the other side.

The most remarkable achievement takes place when she constructs another sturdy bridge by elevating a substantial plank with ropes and positioning several large barrels beneath it. By repeatedly pulling the rope to lift the platform and nudging it towards the edge with her feet, she successfully places it so that it can be dropped from one side to the other. Now, she has a means of traversing back and forth, allowing her to investigate what lies beyond. Such engineering ingenuity is truly astounding.

Juliette locates an unpolluted water leak, collects some into a water bottle to drink, ensuring she stays hydrated during her survival journey. Meanwhile, she unearths garments in a wardrobe and selects one that fits perfectly, providing both warmth and shielding for her continued quest for food.

By the close of Episode 1, Juliette uncovers a living soul within the silo. A man concealed behind a vaulted entrance captivates her with music, luring her closer. Upon tracing the melody and attempting to unlock the vault, he peeks through an opening with his eyes, cautioning her that another attempt to open the vault would result in her demise. However, there’s an underlying vulnerability in his tone instead of outright menace.

At San Diego Comic-Con, it was unveiled that Steve Zahn has joined the cast for season two. Readers of the Hugh Howey novels, which the series is based upon, had already deduced that he’ll be portraying a character named Solo. Given what we know about the storyline, it appears that Solo will play a pivotal role in ensuring Juliette’s survival.

According to Zahn, GamesRadar reports that Juliette and Solo gradually develop trust, even though he initially feels uneasy around her. Given that he might not have encountered another human for years, this isn’t surprising. As Zahn explains, “Because of his youthfulness, his inquisitiveness, and his capacity to concentrate on various things, these qualities have helped him survive. However, at this stage, you can tell he’s reached a certain point.” He continues, “She’s an incredible source of life that enters his world, and they go on to develop trust. And trust is crucial.

Back at her home silo, the presumed death and uncleanliness have sparked quite a commotion. The trailer features Bernard (Tim Robbins) dealing with the aftermath, including Juliette’s ability to walk over the hill. Residents are eager for explanations, and if their questions go unanswered, a rebellion could ensue. It remains to be seen what role Juliette will play in this narrative, but it promises to be engaging: The second season of Silo has received an impressive 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating from critics.

At present, Juliette is doing well independently, and with the aid of the enigmatic Solo, she might uncover some of the secrets she’s been searching for. With clean air, a place to rest, and water, Juliette has the opportunity to reflect.
