As a devoted fan of Oliver Platt’s captivating performances, I can’t help but feel a sense of delight and camaraderie with this multi-talented actor. His ability to seamlessly transition between the rough-around-the-edges Jimmy “Cicero” Kalinowski in “The Bear” and the composed Dr. Daniel Charles in “Chicago Med” is nothing short of remarkable.
If you enjoy shows set in Chicago, such as “The Bear” and “Chicago Med,” then you’re likely familiar with Oliver Platt’s acting. In “The Bear,” he portrays Jimmy “Cicero” Kalinowski, who manages the money at the eponymous restaurant. On “Chicago Med,” he serves as chief psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Charles, assisting other doctors at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. Ever wondered why Dr. Charles seems so familiar? That’s Oliver Platt! Interestingly, both shows are set in the same city, making it easy for Platt to move between sets – they’re just 200 yards apart! However, this convenience led to a rather amusing mistake when Platt accidentally slipped into Jimmy’s character during a “Chicago Med” rehearsal.
In an interview with Associated Press, Platt (who often works on both shows in one day) shared an interesting incident involving Jimmy and Gaffney. He said, “When I stepped out of character, the director asked me, ‘Oliver, what’s that accent?'” It seemed that taking a break from the Berzatto family dramas was more challenging than Platt anticipated. “I found it effortless to slip into Dr. Charles, as I’ve been playing him for eight years. But Uncle Jimmy is still new, and I guess I was unintentionally rehearsing for the afternoon.” Despite a few hiccups here and there, Platt is thoroughly enjoying his role transition from doctor to family financier. He refers to the shows as “presents” in his enthusiasm.
Platt was starstruck on the set of The Bear
Working on two fantastic series in the same city is a dream realized for Oliver Platt. He shared his enthusiasm with the Associated Press, saying, “It’s truly enjoyable. It adds excitement to my day.” The seasoned actor is thrilled about the rising success of “The Bear,” and continues to be amazed by how Uncle Jimmy fits into the storyline. Initially making brief appearances in Season 1, returning for Season 2 offered Platt a fresh perspective. “My first day back on set in Season 2 was actually in the restaurant kitchen. And I must admit, I was starstruck. And that’s an extraordinary feeling.”
Following her memorable appearances in some standout episodes of “Chicago Med,” Platt has become an essential piece in the cast of “The Bear.” While Jimmy may not be the most endearing character in “The Bear,” Platt enjoys the challenge of portraying him. “I’m really enjoying the way the character is written,” Platt, a five-time Emmy nominee, stated. “It’s like you never know what to expect – will it be the gentle but slightly twisted father figure or the guy who demands his money back? What you see isn’t always what you get.” If only Dr. Charles were there to analyze that dynamic – he would undoubtedly have a great time unraveling the complexities of the Berzatto family.
