The initial two seasons of “Tracker” suggest it’s a hit, but adjustments in season 3 might prevent the show from becoming repetitive. In “Tracker,” Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) traverses the U.S., taking on missing persons cases for the cash rewards. He’s an excellent detective, yet each episode follows a similar pattern at present.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I recognize that maintaining momentum and a large viewer base for “Tracker” isn’t just about sticking with the same formula. The series needs to evolve and introduce elements that keep it engaging for long-time fans, while also remaining attractive to newcomers. It’s all about finding creative ways to keep things fresh without losing sight of what made us love the show in the first place.
Tracker Is Ripe For A Major Change After 2 Hit Seasons
The Procedural Format Can Become Boring
Following two broadcast seasons, the series Tracker has solidified its position as a strong procedural, outperforming even NCIS, CBS’s highest-rated program. It has developed its principal cast of characters and a consistent show structure. Each episode finds Colter Shaw tackling a fresh case alongside the Tracker team, who offer assistance remotely. He delves into investigations with the aid of locals in a new town, enabling the show to rotate through a continuous lineup of guest stars. By the end of each hour, Shaw resolves the case, not always with a positive outcome.
In its second season, the series has added intrigue to its procedural format by reintroducing some familiar faces from the first season, swapping Colter’s search for a missing person with tracking a dog, incorporating potentially supernatural elements, and structuring an episode like a tense horror story set in a snowbound cabin. These changes have kept audiences engaged, but procedurals can sometimes grow monotonous for viewers.
There’s an easy fix for that for a show like Tracker.
Tracker Season 3 Should Do More Serialized Storytelling
Tracker Needs Viewers To Keep Tuning In
As a dedicated movie buff, I’ve come to appreciate the flexibility of procedural TV shows – you can dive in or out whenever you please, making it effortless to fit them into your schedule. However, this convenience has its pitfalls; while it allows newcomers to jump aboard at any point and follow the characters and plots with ease, it might lead to a sense of repetition for long-term viewers who yearn for something fresh. Injecting elements of serialized storytelling can significantly enhance a show’s longevity by keeping things intriguing and unpredictable.
In simpler terms, serialized storytelling involves extending the appearances of guest stars beyond a single episode and allowing plots to unfold over multiple episodes rather than being confined to just one. The series ‘Tracker’ has dabbled in this approach by reintroducing characters like Billie (Sofia Pernas) and Keaton (Brent Sexton) for various cases alongside Colter, and incorporating Reenie (Fiona Rene) and her new supervisor as a subplot during season 2. Additionally, ‘Tracker’ introduced Colter’s “white whale” case, but it was resolved relatively swiftly without providing much background or build-up for the audience to follow along effectively.
Watching characters return over multiple episodes within a season provides an opportunity for the series to introduce fresh character interactions, unfold extensive narratives, and delve deeper into the characters’ complexities. It also stirs up the dynamics of the primary cast as new connections are forged in the Colter investigations’ environment. The reappearance of recurring guest stars for a more prolonged storyline can enable the show to fully flesh out these temporary characters, cultivate fresh plotlines involving the established cast, and ultimately, enrich the overall narrative.
Longer Arcs Would Make It Easier For Tracker Season 3 To Focus On The Shaw Family Mystery
Tracker Only Has One Longer Arc Right Now
Although Tracker’s first two seasons predominantly consisted of standalone episodes, a key element of the narrative has been progressing in a continuous manner. The enigma surrounding Colter Shaw’s childhood and the events leading up to his father’s disappearance is the singular thread that runs through the series. However, the show often sets the stage for this ongoing storyline at the beginning and end of each season, while dedicating the majority of the season to individual episodes.
Currently, Tracker’s structure allows viewers to watch only the season premieres and finales to catch up on Colter Shaw’s backstory. However, this setup doesn’t serve fans who prefer to watch the entire season, as they might miss important details. A more serialized format would distribute clues about Colter’s past evenly across the season, keeping viewers engaged from start to finish.
In the third season of “Tracker,” it’s not necessary to completely overhaul the show. The series, being procedural in nature, has elements that work well, such as Hartley’s authentic portrayal of Colter Shaw and his versatility in adapting to various storylines written for him. To make the stories more captivating in season 3, introducing longer arcs, perhaps spanning several episodes, would be beneficial. This would allow the series to delve deeper into character development and keep viewers engaged for a longer period.
