When is a shock comic NOT a shock comic?
When his writing is so skillfully constructed, it removes any hint of a trick or ploy. It’s even better if he doesn’t identify with that label from the start.
Tony Hinchcliffe, known for his shock comedy style, gained widespread attention with his jokes at the Tom Brady roast, leading up to his controversial appearance at a Trump rally that later went viral. As the host of “Kill Tony,” Hinchcliffe is unapologetically provocative, embracing this image as an essential aspect of his brand and persona.
Sam Morril is different.
He’s a classic stand-up comedian, dishing out humor centered around contemporary topics like dating and sex. Occasionally, he veers off into more taboo or awkward subjects for added impact.
Without flinching.
In a starkly questionable move, I found myself squirming in my seat during his May 10 performance at Denver’s Paramount Theatre as he delved into a series of jokes that targeted Anne Frank, the Holocaust, school shootings, convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein, and more. The content was not only distasteful but also deeply insensitive, leaving many in the audience uncomfortable and bewildered.
In comedy circles, they were all spot on with their wit and precision. Each joke was so finely crafted, it would take a thick skin not to be amused, unless of course, that’s the desired effect.
In a fresh twist of words: The comedian’s “Errors Tour” showcased Morril at his peak – swift, brutally funny, and unfazed by traditional expectations. He skillfully navigated through jokes about Anne Frank, maintaining audience engagement and his impeccable rhythm throughout the performance.
Occasionally, some comedians walk a fine line with audiences, recognizing when they may have overstepped boundaries. Morril often embraces this dance, making his audience feel uncomfortable at times. However, his performance in Denver didn’t require such an approach.
The night didn’t lack for emotional depth.

1. He jokingly criticized using the phrase “fighting depression,” suggesting he’s faced similar challenges himself.
2. He openly discussed his past romantic mishaps, a blend of victories and embarrassing remarks that came off as melancholic rather than macho-cool.
A Jewish comedian confessed to a meeting with a woman harboring anti-Semitic views. The tale concluded with a humorous yet insightful twist, demonstrating self-deprecation and a deep understanding of human nature. Many men aren’t always comfortable admitting their sexual desires. Morril presented this truth more eloquently than most.
In another instance, a stormy journey on an airplane that caused him to question whether he would survive until the plane touched down, resonated with him in a unique manner.
In a rare moment, Morril openly expressed his distaste for irritating individuals amidst his act, but instead of his typical humor, his words were tinged with anger. For a fleeting instant, it seemed as if the comedic mask slipped off, revealing a cynical underside that dominated the stage.
In the end, he made a full recovery, spending the closing moments engaging in playful banter with the crowd. To give credit where it’s due, the Denver crowd provided ample comedic inspiration. It turns out that people share much more than just borrowed sugar!
Morril concluded the evening by sharing an extraordinary account about Stu, a local magician and self-proclaimed mayor of Virginia Beach. Such captivating narratives should find their way into various platforms in our media sphere; whether it’s his yarn about “The White Knight” or the enigmatic story of the ex who just wouldn’t depart.
The anecdotes he shares hold significantly greater weight compared to his sporadic surprise elements. His approach towards both is one that places him among the elite ranks of stand-up comedy, due to the respect and care he demonstrates.
