As a lifelong fan of Jim Carrey and his iconic roles, I can’t help but be intrigued by this recent petition to release a four-hour cut of “The Grinch.” Growing up with the 2000 adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s classic tale, I remember the excitement that came with each annual viewing during the holiday season.
Fans of the 2000 holiday classic “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” often simply known as “The Grinch,” have started an unexpected campaign on Change.org regarding the film. Unlike most petitions about movies and TV shows that typically request a cancellation reversal or demand a remake of a particular storyline, this one is asking for something unique: they’re petitioning director Ron Howard to reveal his rumored extended four-hour cut of the movie.
Indeed, though the film clocks in at a compact 104 minutes, Howard has mentioned in the past that he had a more extensive version of the Dr. Seuss story ready to go. He meticulously edited and shortened it to create the beloved version we all know. This revelation is enough for Tom Sinclair to initiate a petition, urging Howard to unveil his Director’s Cut for the movie’s 25th anniversary next year. The petition declares:
It’d be fantastic if we could get a chance to watch all the previously cut scenes from the film again, as this would significantly elevate the viewing experience for fans. Many of these deleted scenes from ‘The Grinch’ on DVD and Blu-ray are in standard definition (480ip), but fans are anxiously waiting for them to be upgraded and released in high-definition versions, preferably remastered as HD editions. We’re excited to see more of the extra footage that occasionally airs during the annual ABC Freeform broadcasts, as well as any other previously unseen material. Interestingly, Ron Howard mentioned that his original edit of the film was four hours long, with approximately two hours being trimmed from the final version.
Will ‘The Grinch’ Get a 25th Anniversary Director’s Cut?
Enthusiasts of “The Grinch” have consistently appreciated Jim Carrey’s vibrant and rubbery portrayal of the title role, often placing it among his most memorable performances. As the 25th anniversary draws near, there’s a strong possibility that “The Grinch” will receive some kind of re-release, but it seems unlikely to be the extended four-hour version that the petition creator and nearly 1800 supporters are advocating for.
As Christmas nears, The Grinch is garnering plenty of interest, with its resurgence on streaming platforms. Additionally, the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has presented interviewers an opportunity to inquire if Jim Carrey might be inclined to reprise the role for a follow-up film that honors the legacy. However, given that The Grinch has a conclusive narrative, there isn’t much room to develop another story without potentially damaging the original movie’s standing.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Carrey sparked hope of a Grinchy return when asked which of his former characters he would love to play again and picked his hairy green Christmas-wrecker. He said:
“Wow, you understand, donning the Grinch costume was quite a challenge. On the day, I had to use a lot of makeup and it was hard to breathe. It was really tough! The children were constantly on my mind throughout the process. ‘For the kids, for the kids, for the kids.’ Now, with motion capture technology, I can be free to focus on other things. The possibilities in this world are endless!
Though Carrey suggested retirement hints earlier, his character Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog series rekindled a creative spark within him, potentially leading to exciting developments ahead. As for whether he’ll reprise his role as the Grinch remains uncertain for now; we’ll have to stay tuned. For now, enjoy streaming the original movie on Peacock until December 31.
