How The Hulk’s Only Weakness Stopped Him From Killing Marvel’s Avengers

How The Hulk's Only Weakness Stopped Him From Killing Marvel's Avengers

As a lifelong Marvel fan and avid gamer with a soft spot for Hulk, I have to admit that the Immortal Hulk storyline is nothing short of terrifying. The sheer power and invincibility of this version of the green giant is mind-boggling, and it’s both thrilling and nerve-wracking to witness his rampage through the Marvel universe.

Independent of their strength capacities, all iterations of the Hulk generally stand out as the mightiest character within any given setting. Among these, the Hulk portrayed by Mark Ruffalo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is most renowned, but not the strongest version by far. In fact, the most powerful manifestation of Hulk is deemed too fearsome for the MCU, and instead, this terrifying form is delved into in the comic series “The Immortal Hulk.” This reinterpretation of Hulk, penned by Al Ewing with illustrations from Joey Bennett, Ruy Josè, and Paul Mounts, depicts him as a virtually indestructible being who’s beyond mortality. Additionally, this version of the Hulk is not only angrier than typical but also eager to end lives.

In “The Immortal Hulk” #7, when the Hulk clashes with the Avengers, the battle heavily favors the Hulk due to his immense strength. To give Earth’s Mightiest Heroes a fighting chance, Marvel introduces a unique vulnerability for the Hulk – the colossal Helios Laser, wielded by Iron Man. Recognizing that this is their only hope, Iron Man flies towards the weapon and unleashes it upon the Hulk from above. The powerful beam of the Helios Laser not only defeats the Hulk but also obliterates the entire town they were fighting in.

In simpler terms, the event in question seems to border on an unexpected solution (deus ex machina), as the Helios Laser, which hadn’t been present in the comics before or after this incident, was used to subdue the Hulk, a character known as “The Immortal Hulk.” This fight suggests that the Avengers wouldn’t have been able to defeat the Hulk without the Helios Laser. However, it’s important to note that the focus of the comic remains on the Hulk, and this event primarily serves to set up the next issue where he wakes up dissected in a secret government facility and makes an escape in a graphic manner that would be too intense for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Yet, at least Iron Man (Tony Stark) can take solace in the fact that the Hulk now has a recorded defeat against the Helios Laser.

The Avengers fight shows just how dangerous Immortal Hulk is

In a unique and bizarre phase in his life, the Immortal Hulk character has been through numerous deaths and resurrections that initially appear unrelated. It turns out they can’t die permanently due to a complex and mentally demanding predicament involving their diverse set of personalities shifting between our world and a dark realm known as the Below-Place. To complicate matters further, a potent and dangerous entity called the One Below All poses a threat by masquerading as Bruce Banner’s abusive father, Brian Banner. The storyline becomes increasingly intricate with heavy horror elements, ensuring that anyone who crosses Hulk’s destructive path is in for a terrible experience.

In this battle, the semi-possessed Hulk demonstrates an impressive display of strength. Initially, he swiftly overpowers heavyweights like Ghost Rider and Thor. Next, he dismisses Captain America and Black Panther effortlessly, reduces Iron Man’s Hulkbuster armor to rubble, and propels She-Hulk away before Iron Man employs the Helios Laser. Furthermore, the Hulk exhibits a chilling grin as he hurls insults that are sure to haunt some of the team members for quite some time after the fight has ended.

Following Thor’s quick takedown, the astonished thunder god also shared some valuable insights about the Hulk’s significantly augmented power scale. According to the Asgardian, the green behemoth’s new talents encompass capabilities such as detecting deception by scent, essentially transforming the Hulk into a divine entity… or, as Thor humorously notes, a demon. It’s fortunate that the Avengers just happened to have that game-altering laser ready at hand, isn’t it?
