How The Twilight Zone episode “On Thursday We Leave for Home” got its final shot

On Thursday We Leave for Home,” penned by Rod Serling and helmed by Buzz Kulik, is distinguished as one of the finest episodes from the hour-long format employed during the show’s fourth season on TV. This episode delves into power dynamics, its acquisition, and its consequences. It chronicles the struggle of a few remaining settlers clinging to existence on a desolate planet intended for colonization. Led by William Benteen, portrayed by James Whitmore, these settlers persist in their hope for rescue amidst a journey filled with twin suns and unforgiving landscapes.

As the rescue vessel at last makes its appearance, Captain Benteen experiences a weakening of his authority over the 187 settlers he guides, as the rescuers regale them with tales from Earth and even engage in friendly games of baseball. Envious, Benteen insists that his followers continue to follow his lead once they reach Earth, warning them that the planet is a desolate wasteland where their need for his leadership will be greater than ever before.

Following a community vote, we chose to depart, but Benteen impulsively opted to remain behind, isolated. It wasn’t until the rescue vessel had vanished from the planet’s surface that he acknowledged his error. In the closing scene, the camera slowly withdraws, revealing the abandoned metal structures of our settlement and the desolate landscape beneath – me standing solitary in the midst of it all.

As a gamer putting myself in the shoes of the director of photography, George T. Clemens, I didn’t originally envision that climactic, emotional shot during pre-production with Kulik. In Marc Scott Zicree’s “The Twilight Zone Companion,” it was revealed that during our final day on set, Kulik expressed a desire to shoot the finale from an elevated position, overlooking the entire landscape to emphasize Benteen’s insignificance. To test its feasibility, I climbed up a ladder and discovered what I suspected – the shacks had no roofs, as they were left without for lighting purposes during interior scenes. However, to bring Kulik’s vision to life, we had to swiftly add roofs at the very end of our shooting schedule.

Clemens mentioned that it was necessary to swiftly cover the roofs of these small houses with tacks and canvas during the night,” he explained, “as we needed to complete this task promptly.

The outcome was satisfying enough to warrant experiencing one of the show’s fourth season’s top endings, a fitting conclusion to one of Serling’s most exceptional scripts from that period.
