Who Was Joe Spinell?
As a dedicated gamer and movie enthusiast, I can’t help but appreciate the enigmatic presence of Joe Spinell on the silver screen. Although his visage might be recognizable to some, it may not be immediately clear where they’ve encountered him before. You see, this underrated talent graced us with his presence in some truly iconic films – Taxi Driver, Rocky, and The Godfather. Yet, despite these notable appearances, Spinell remained just beyond the mainstream limelight.
I was born on October 28, 1936, in the bustling Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. With an insatiable passion for the arts and a knack for hustling, I honed my craft in off-broadway productions and performed with Theater of the Forgotten, a troupe that put on unique shows for unconventional audiences, like prison inmates. Struggling to make ends meet as an actor, I took on a variety of odd jobs to immerse myself in New York City’s vibrant culture. These roles included driving a taxi cab, working at the post office, and manning a liquor store counter. My fortunes changed when I landed a small part in The Godfather. This role marked my breakthrough and led me to become one of the highest-paid actors within the production.
How Joe Spinell Became One of The Highest Paid Actors on The Godfather
Joe Spinell joined the cast of “The Godfather” in an uncredited role for the first film and had a minor credit in “Godfather Part II.” While working on the set, he developed a friendship with director Francis Ford Coppola. Due to his frequent presence on set, Spinell was employed as a daily actor for six months of production. Unlike other actors who were paid according to their contracts, he wasn’t compensated as per SAG minimum wages. Marlon Brando, the only actor who received more than Spinell, was initially given $250,000 upfront and a share of the box office revenue, resulting in Brando earning approximately $2 million in total.
In “The Joe Spinell Story” documentary, filmmaker William Lustig recounted how he became suspicious of Joe Spinell’s unusual financial dealings concerning the production of the movie “Maniac.”
“Joe didn’t have a bank account due to his financial disagreements with the IRS. Until his passing, he would receive these residual checks from his acting debut in The Godfather. In the mid 70s, he would come by my office downtown each month, asking if I could cash his $16,000 checks for him since he didn’t have a bank account. I was always puzzled by these large checks he received from The Godfather’s residuals. One day, I couldn’t help but ask him, ‘Joe, where do you get this money from? Why are you still receiving these huge residual payments?'”
Based on William Lustig’s accounts, it’s believed that Joe Spinell earned a substantial income from his unaccredited work on “The Godfather” series, possibly up until his death in 1989. Given the lengthy duration of these payments and the fact that Al Pacino was paid $35,000 for his role in the first film, it’s plausible that Spinell made more than many other actors involved in the production.
In “The Godfather Part II,” Joe Spinell portrayed the character of Will Cicci after having appeared in the initial installment. By this point in the franchise’s development, Spinell received significantly less compensation than other cast members. Reportedly, Al Pacino earned approximately $500,000 for reprising his role.
Joe Spinell Was Supposed to play a Larger Part in The Godfather Part III
Joe Spinell may have had a larger legacy as an actor, with The Godfather Part III looking to expand his character and give him a prominent role in the movie. However, after the actor’s untimely death, he was written out of the script and replaced by the character Joey Zasa, played by actor Joe Mantegna. It is interesting to think about what could have been, but whether it would have been the actor’s big break or if he would have even made it to the screen with his failing health is unknown.
Joe Spinell, a man with a tumultuous life off-screen, endured two failed marriages and struggled with volatile addictions to drugs and alcohol. His personal struggles also included periods of depression, believed to be linked to his substance abuse. The loss of his beloved mother further compounded his difficulties, pushing him towards dangerous health declines despite friends’ efforts to intervene. Tragically, Joe Spinell passed away on January 13, 1989, in his Queens, New York apartment. While taking a shower, he suffered a severe cut and, instead of seeking medical help, succumbed to his hemophilia and bled out.
Despite having a prolific film career with over 60 productions under his belt, Joe Spinell’s most notable roles were relatively minor and tend to be overlooked. However, his collaborations with esteemed industry figures left an indelible mark, resulting in a devoted fanbase that continues to appreciate his talent.>
