As a seasoned Fortnite gamer with countless hours under my belt, I must say, this new Proximity Chat feature has truly spiced up the game for me! It adds a whole new layer of immersion and interaction that was previously missing.
In Fortnite, the long-awaited Proximity Chat functionality is now available, yet there’s a significant condition: this feature can be utilized exclusively on custom islands created by users, and only the host of the game lobby has the power to activate it within that space.
If you want to know how to use the new feature, here’s everything you’ll need to know.
How to enable Proximity Chat
As previously stated in the introduction, the feature known as Proximity Chat can be utilized exclusively on islands created by users. This means that if you wish to use this feature, you must either act as the host or convince the host to activate it for the entire group. Once enabled, other players can then toggle it on individually.
Here are the next steps:
- Open ‘Island Settings‘ from the pause menu
- Select the ‘Mode‘ tab on the left
- Click the ‘Voice Chat‘ drop down menu
- Toggle on ‘Proximity Chat‘ to begin using it
Once the setting is on globally, players can also enable it if they choose.
In this scenario, if the game is activated, both you and all other participants will have the ability to listen to nearby opposing players. Additionally, a heads-up display (HUD) alert will inform you when someone is talking.
Additionally, the host has the ability to modify the settings even more. These adjustments include “Full Volume Distance” and “Falloff Distance” options.
The first feature adjusts the range where all speech sounds clear, while the second one determines how close you need to be for Proximity Chat to catch other players’ voices.
There’s a chance that we could introduce this particular feature to the Battle Royale game mode at some point down the line. For now, it seems like we’re using the existing version as a trial or preliminary stage. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed and stay tuned for updates.
