As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can say with certainty that the advent of Steam compatibility on mobile devices has revolutionized my gaming life. From the comfort of my commute or during a coffee break, I can now access most of the features I’ve grown accustomed to on my desktop. However, one nagging issue still remains – redeeming codes.
As a long-time PC gamer who often finds myself on the go, I couldn’t be more thrilled about games like last year’s Dota Underlords making their way onto mobile devices. This means that I can now enjoy Steam games and many of its functionalities right from my phone, taking my gaming experience with me wherever I go. However, one area where they still need to improve is the process for redeeming codes, which can be a bit cumbersome at times. Overall, it’s a fantastic development that allows me to stay connected to the Steam community and enjoy my favorite games even when I’m away from home.
If you find yourself unsure of how to redeem a game or wallet code while out and about, it may lead you to repeatedly scan the Steam app for solutions. No worries, though! We’ve got you covered with our helpful tips.
No matter if you’re trying to activate a wallet code or game code on Steam, this guide will help you do so from any location.
Redeeming wallet codes in-app
In your Steam application, there’s an undisclosed feature for code redemption, yet it’s limited to wallet top-ups and prepaid cards exclusively. This implies that you can’t redeem game codes within the app to download later, but with prepaid codes, it certainly is feasible. Here’s how…
- Open the Steam app
- Select “Store” from the menu
- Select “Account Details” from the Store drop-down menu
- About your wallet balance, below the Store & Purchase History heading, there’s a link reading “+ Add funds to your Steam Wallet” click here
- Below your Current Wallet balance, there’s a link reading “Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code” click here
- Enter your code in the box and click Continue
- You should be all done, and the pre-paid card should be applied to your Wallet Balance
Redeeming Steam game codes in browser
Right, now you want to redeem a game key. If you want to redeem a game key, you can’t do it through the option listed above, in fact, you can’t use the app to do so at all. Instead, you’ll be logging into Steam through your mobile browser and redeeming the code online. Here’s how…
- Open this link in your mobile browser
- Sign in to your Steam account using your Steam app to authenticate
- Enter the code in the box provided and click Continue
- You should be all done, and your game should be added to your game library
I’m really disappointed that you can’t presently use the app to claim your game, but let’s hope Valve introduces that feature soon. Here are some helpful suggestions to remember while redeeming codes down the line…
1 Get the app, secure your account
If you’re among those who use Steam and haven’t downloaded the app yet, it’s high time you do so. The Steam application not only facilitates login authentication but also enhances the security of your account by making it harder for unauthorized individuals like strangers or hackers to access your account without your smartphone.
Although it might not be particularly enticing, you can still engage in conversations with your friends and manage your profile whenever you are mobile using this app. Thus, it serves as a convenient companion for you while using Steam.
As a devoted user, I can confidently say that this application is generally user-friendly, except perhaps when it comes to redeeming codes. However, despite this minor hiccup, I highly recommend giving it a try due to its valuable added layer of security. After all, peace of mind is always an attractive bonus!
2 Bookmark the browser redemption link
If you plan on frequently using game codes away from your computer, consider saving the online redemption page to your mobile browser’s bookmarks for easy access in the future. Here’s the link you can save right now:
It is actually possible to open that link in the Steam app, mind. To do so you’ll have to click the above link while in the app, and the easiest way to do so is to leave a comment on your own Steam profile with the link, so you can find it and click through from the app.
As someone who has spent countless hours gaming and navigating various platforms, I must say that while this method may seem like a clever loophole, it’s essentially just using the Steam app as a browser to redeem codes. Having personally experienced the intricacies of digital redemption, I can attest to the fact that as long as the task is accomplished effectively and efficiently, the means by which it’s done is almost irrelevant – especially if it saves time or simplifies the process. So, while some may scoff at this “cheeky workaround,” I say, if it works for you, go ahead and use it!
