In Elden Ring Nightreign, there are two characters that you don’t get access to right away; instead, you need to work your way through the game to uncover and play as these characters.
In most FromSoftware games, the way to acquire Duchess and Revenant isn’t explicitly explained; instead, it’s purposefully made a bit confusing so that players must figure it out on their own.
If you’d rather skip the trail and quickly fill Nightreign’s team, we have a solution for you! First off, unlock Duchess because only then will Revenant’s brief quest line become accessible. So, let’s get started with Duchess.
How to unlock Duchess
As a fan, I’ve discovered that to open Duchess, you must acquire the antique pocket watch as your reward for completing Nightreign’s initial expedition, named Tricephalos. Good luck on your quest!
- Play the Tricephalos Expedition to obtain the Old Pocket Watch.
- Deliver the Old Pocket Watch to the Priestess in the Roundtable Hold.
Find the Old Pocket Watch
It’s somewhat unclear if there are any specific requirements for the Pocket Watch to fall at the end of Tricephalos, as I managed to acquire it with several other relics during my third playthrough without beating the final boss first.
Keep playing Tricephalos until it appears in the same post-Expedition rewards screen as Relics.

After securing the Old Pocket Watch, head back to the Roundtable Hold hub area and chat up the Priestess there. A fresh dialogue choice, ‘Let’s show her the old pocketwatch’, will pop up. Give it a click to initiate a cutscene and gain access to Duchess in the character selection screen.

As a keen player eagerly anticipating the challenge of Revenant, here’s what you need to do: First, obtain the Besmirched Frame item. Then, venture into the Roundtable Hold and locate a Phantom. Once found, triumph over the Revenant in combat. Good luck!
- Purchase the Besmirched Frame from the Small Jar Bazaar.
- Locate a phantom in Roundtable Hold.
- Defeat Revenant.
Buy the Besmirched Frame
Once you’ve successfully obtained Duchess, a fresh addition, the “Soiled Picture Frame” will become available in the stock of the “Tiny Jar Marketplace”. You can acquire it for 1500 Murks.

By acquiring the Tarnished Canvas, a Ghostly Non-Player Character will become visible within the Roundtable Hold. Navigate towards the main chamber, then follow the southeastern corridor and take a sharp left turn. You’ll find them gazing at a painting in that location. The illustration provided serves as a guide.
After purchasing the Besmirched Frame, interact with the Phantom in the location shown above.In the far corner, you’ll spot the Phantom. Engage with it, and you’ll be whisked away back to Nightreign’s lesson zone.
The Phantom can be found hiding in a secluded corner. Talk to it, and it will transport you back to where Nightreign is teaching.
Or for a more colloquial style:
Hang out in the corner, and you’ll run into the Phantom. Chat ’em up, and they’ll zap you right back to where Nightreign’s giving lessons at.
Best Revenant in battle
After getting back to the tutorial zone, I made my way to the dilapidated remains of where I clashed with the Fell Omen during the tutorial boss fight. That’s where I encountered Revenant.
In this battle, Revenant is accompanied by three Phantoms summoned from her side. You can choose either to eliminate these Phantoms first or ignore them and solely focus on Revenant. Regardless of your strategy, once you defeat Revenant, she’ll become available as a playable character in Nightreign, thus completing the entire roster.
