Get ready to find those four-leaf clovers and hidden pots of gold, everyone! St. Patrick’s Day is quickly approaching, and SYFY is joining in on the fun with a full day of marathons featuring all the Leprechaun movies, including the 2014 prequel titled Leprechaun: Origins.
The franchise began in 1993, and its first movie, directed by Mark Jones, earned over $8 million at the box office – eight times its estimated production cost. This film also marked an early acting appearance for Jennifer Aniston before her role on “Friends,” while Warwick Davis solidified his status as a horror icon in the cult category. Incidentally, Davis enjoyed the part so much that he reprised it a total of five more times, taking on the main character each time.
Jones shared in an interview with ScreenRant in 2023 that this unexpected IP has been caring for him for 30 years, and it’s truly astounding. He described it as something that just won’t stop, adding that the fans have grasped his intentions. It’s a blend of comedy and horror that shouldn’t be taken too seriously, yet it resonates. There are young children, as young as eight years old, who adore Leprechaun. They’ve been watching these films for years… Every few years, it seems to find a new audience. It just keeps going.
Even though Davis has stepped down from the part, he still harbors a brilliant concept for another Leprechaun installment. In an interview with Dread Central back in 2012, he expressed his wish to expand the Leprechaun universe. “What I’ve always dreamt of seeing in the Leprechaun realm is more leprechauns,” he said. “It wouldn’t be right if there was only one out there, so I envisioned that once he departed from the human world, he would return to his own leprechaun family, a leprechaun wife who is even more wicked than him. It would be amusing to see this disturbed character being haunted by an even more twisted spouse; and just imagine their offspring!
