As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the digital world of stand-up comedy specials, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for the upcoming wave of hilarity on Hulu. The platform is clearly making a bold move with their “Hularious” initiative, and it’s fascinating to see how they are strategically courting fresh talent like Ralph Barbosa.
Hulu is adding more comedy content to its collection, with comedian Ralph Barbosa set to debut a brand new hour-long special on the platform.
The news comes just weeks before Hulu rolls out its ambitious stand-up initiative, which it has cheekily titled “Hularious.” Jim Gaffigan will serve as the brand’s guinea pig, with his new special, Jim Gaffigan: The Skinny, kicking it off Nov. 22. Other hours, from major names like Bill Burr, Sebastian Maniscalco and Roy Wood Jr., will follow. The Barbosa special has not yet been dated, and its focus, at least for now, is being kept under wraps.
Unlike Burr, Gaffigan, and Maniscalco who are seasoned arena performers, Barbosa is relatively new in his career. At just 28 years old, he made his debut on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show in early 2023, and launched his theater tour, The Ralph Barbosa: Super Cool Ass Tour, the following year. Although this isn’t his first stand-up special, his latest one, Ralph Barbosa: Cowabunga, was released on Netflix, which dominates the growing market for stand-up shows. Before that, he had released hours of comedy content on HBO Max (Entre Nos: The Winners 3) and YouTube (Don’t Tell Comed y), with the latter accumulating over 6 million views since then.
Over the past few months, Hulu has been emphasizing its connection to Disney’s vast catalog and the acting and writing prospects it offers to attract comedians such as Barbosa from other streaming services. Moreover, their approach to content selection is another advantage they have over competitors like Netflix. Unlike Netflix, which releases specials weekly, Hulu follows a monthly schedule, promising substantial marketing efforts for each release. Already scheduled on Hulu are comedy hours by Andrew Santino, Zarna Garg, Chris Distefano, Atsuko Okatsuka, Ilana Glazer, Jessica Kirson, and Matteo Lane.
