This week, enthusiasts of “The Hunger Games” series have been treated to another addition to Suzanne Collins’ franchise titled “Sunrise on the Reaping“. The newly released book is swiftly climbing bestseller charts, and in response, Lionsgate is simultaneously developing one of the upcoming film adaptations with a planned release in 2026. As fans delve into the new novel, they might wonder about the progress of the movie. Well, a producer has provided an update on the latest developments.
Nina Jacobson, a key figure in the production of the Hunger Games films since their inception, recently shared updates with Variety regarding the progress of the Sunrise on the Reaping film, which was initially announced last summer. To quote Jacobson directly:
1) We’ve made significant progress due to the initial leap we took; if not for this, we wouldn’t be this far ahead. Immediately after taking action, we got started. Although it hasn’t been revealed yet, we have a solid blueprint that we’re still refining. Our working areas are now set up.
The sunrise unveils the Reaping as the moment when a fresh work by Suzanne Collins is revealed, an unusual occurrence since its cinematic adaptation also premieres simultaneously. In Jacobson’s interview, she recounted that shortly after Collins completed The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, she phoned her and proposed another book, asking the producer to read it and determine if it had potential as a film.

Currently sitting on top of Amazon’s bestsellers list, this latest edition chronicles the journey of a young Haymitch who is selected as one of four tributes from District 12 to participate in the 50th Hunger Games and the Quarter Quell competition.

Before Francis Lawrence, the director of the Hunger Games franchise, got his hands on Suzanne Collins’ novel, Jacobson had already read it at the agent’s house. Jacobson found herself on the edge of her seat, tears streaming down as she read through it. Lionsgate eventually secured the rights to the new book following this emotional response, and they are now in the early stages of production.
Since the book and film adaptation were revealed, fans have been eagerly speculating over who might take on the role of Haymitch previously played by Woody Harrelson. Similarly, Jacobson discussed the casting procedure.
This early, unpublished script presents an intriguing dilemma for us. We’ve been hesitant to cast actors for fear that script leaks might occur. The ideal candidate for the role isn’t someone trying to imitate Woody Harrelson, but rather an actor who can convincingly portray a young version of the character, before the emotional turmoil wrought by the Games took hold. Finding someone who embodies the essence of Woody Harrelson’s mischief and uncovers the person he was before the events of “The Hunger Games” is crucial. After all, only Woody Harrelson can truly be Woody Harrelson, but we must find the underlying traits that make him who he is and explore how they transformed him into the character we meet at the beginning of the story.
Enthusiasts of “The Hunger Games” series have been actively discussing potential castings, with Tom Glynn Carney from “House of the Dragon” and Tanner Buchanan from “Cobra Kai” being frequently mentioned as top picks. Fans are especially excited by Tanner’s positive reaction to being suggested for a role. As fans mourn Haymitch’s backstory in “Sunrise on the Reaping,” they eagerly await further updates about the upcoming production.
In just a few years from now, you’ll have the opportunity to see the younger version of Haymitch, as the film is slated for release in cinemas on November 20, 2026.
